Recap / Runaways (2017) S03E01: "Smoke and Mirrors"

Go To

With the team split up and Jonah and his family on the warpath, the Runaways must regroup.

  • A Glitch in the Matrix:
    • Realizing she's inside the Algorithm, Janet tries to bang the door open, causing a tear which gets her to see Chase's dream world. Chase can see through from his dream as well.
    • Everyone in Karolina's dream world disappears, due to the Magistrate's wife wanting to get rid of her.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It seems the Magistrate's son is possessing Gert. But then "he" apologizes, which his family knows he would never do, revealing that it is Xavin in disguise who lured them (except the wife) into a trap.
  • Call-Back: While searching the Yorkes' house, Molly finds the pink animal pin she left behind during the very first episode that kicked off the whole plot. It comes up again later during her "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight with the Magistrate's wife, enabling Stacey's personality to reassert herself.
  • Gaussian Girl: Everything and everyone in Karolina's simulation is blurry and gorgeous. It gets worse once the simulation starts to break down.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Dale solidifies his decision to make a break from PRIDE in the previous season's finale, freeing Gert after she calls him out for his actions and giving her some training on commanding Old Lace.
  • Heel Realization: Catherine confesses to some of the crimes she and Geoffrey were accused of, including shooting Darius which she actually did. She realizes working with Jonah destroyed their lives.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Molly tries to appeal to Stacey's motherly nature, but the Magistrate's wife responds by attacking her. She manages to bring Stacey out, but it's clear that it won't last long.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Alex expresses approval of Nico finding happiness with Karolina.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Janet, Chase, and Karolina spend the episode trapped inside "the Algorithm", a program made by Janet designed to keep its subjects content and sedated, which appears differently for each of them:
    • Chase's simulation is an attack on the hostel by PRIDE, where Gert is about to be sacrificed by the adults and he's the only one able to save her.
    • Janet's is an Alternate Timeline where she's a successful, world-renowned scientist and Victor is her supportive, stay-at-home spouse.
    • Karolina's is her wedding to Nico, finally reconciled with her mother and with all of the Runaways reunited and in attendance.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The sight of her mother dressed in pink is the first clue for Nico to realize something is seriously off about her.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline
    • The woman who appears in Nico's dream wears a dress so low-cut it's a small miracle her top doesn't fall off every time she breathes.
    • Karolina's wedding dress inside the Lotus-Eater Machine isn't quite as gratuitous, but still bares a lot of skin.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gert calls out her dad for keeping her hostage by listing all the things he's done. He realizes she's right.
  • Time to Unlock More True Potential: With a little help from Dale, Gert manages to enhance her bond with Old Lace to the point that she can command the dinosaur telepathically and see through its eyes.
  • The Unsmile: Xavin makes an attempt at smiling while bonding with Molly, something that (as a warrior of their species) they apparently never do. It's both creepy and oddly endearing.
  • Valley Girl: The Magistrate's daughter, at least while possessing Tina.
  • Wakeup Makeup: Nico wakes up in full makeup and styled eyelashes after her Catapult Nightmare. Given that little to no time seems to have passed since the previous episode, it may well be the very next day and she simply didn't bother to take off her makeup overnight - though that still doesn't explain how immaculate it is.
  • Watch Out for That Tree!: Gert accidentally ran Old Lace into a tree, knocking them both out.
Dale: I guess this is like driving.
