Recap / Rugrats S 6 E 8 The Magic Baby Dil We Meet Again

Go To

The eighth episode of the sixth season of Rugrats (1991).

The Magic Baby

When Dil gets ahold of some cereal pieces that the babies think are magic beans, the babies make wishes on Dil.

Dil We Meet Again

At a block party, the babies think Dil turned into a watermelon.

"The Magic Baby" provides examples of:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Chuckie worries about giants, Angelica tells them that they aren't real, and just something adults make up to scare children, like monsters, sea serpents, and cavities.
  • Beanstalk Parody: After Grandpa Lou tells the babies the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, they become convinced that Dil has eaten some magic beans (really some bean-shaped pieces of cereal) and that he now possesses the ability to grant wishes.
  • Correlation/Causation Gag: Phil and Lil wish for mud and worms on the magic beans. When Stu turns on his Lawn Grower 2000 invention in the backyard, it malfunctions, spraying mud and worms everywhere, causing Phil and Lil to think their wishes came true. This also causes Angelica to believe the beans really are magic.
  • Cowardly Lion: Angelica tricks the babies into thinking a giant is in their house to scare them so she can take Dil away. Chuckie finds Dil in the closet, and when he sees what looks like a giant (really Angelica after a pile of clothes fell on her), his first concern is getting Dil away from the giant.
  • Eskimos Aren't Real: Angelica tells the babies that giants are just something made up by grown-ups to scare them, like monsters, "sea slurpents" and cavities. Justified because she is only 3 years old.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end of the episode, Spike eats the magic beans, so Angelica tries to wish on him.
  • It Kind of Looks Like a Face: A pile of clothes falls on Angelica, making her look like a giant.
  • Magic Feather: When the babies discover that Dil didn't eat the magic beans after all, Chuckie realizes that the wish he made to be brave still came true. Tommy tells Chuckie that maybe the magic was inside him all along.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The kids assume that Dil ate the magic beans because they left them within his reach and, after hearing him burp, they notice that the beans are gone—but in the end, it turns out that he had simply stuffed them into his diaper rather than eating them.
  • Toilet Humor:
    • When the babies believe Dil to have eaten the magic beans, Phil tells Tommy that he doesn't want to wait for them to come out the other end.
    • When the babies look for the giant, Lil suggests that the giant might be using the bathroom. Phil sniffs the air and says, "Nah, I think we'd know."

"Dil We Meet Again" provides examples of:

  • Continuity Nod: At the beginning of this episode, when the babies eat watermelon, Chuckie is worried about eating it, and brings up the time he accidentally swallowed a watermelon seed and Angelica told him a watermelon would grow in his stomach.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Didi takes Dil away to clean him up and leaves a watermelon in his place, causing the babies to believe that Dil turned into a watermelon. The babies later believe that feeding Dil baby food will turn him back into a baby, and when Didi brings Dil back after they feed him baby food, they believe their plan worked.
  • The Diaper Change:
    • When Didi takes Dil away to clean him, she changes his diaper. Just as she is ready to take Dil back to the party, Dil poops his diaper, meaning she has to change him again.
    • Lucy changes Phil's diaper at the block party, and as she does this, Howard asks her, "Pardon me, Ma'am, has that been sterilized?"
  • Literal-Minded: When Betty catches the babies feeding Dil watermelon, she says, "If you keep feeding him like that, he's going to turn into a watermelon!". Thanks to Didi taking Dil away to clean him and leaving a watermelon in his place, the babies believe they really did turn Dil into a watermelon.
  • Locked in the Bathroom: A variant; when Lou gets tired of Howard badgering him with safety rules, he places a broom handle in front of the door to port-a-potty when Howard is using it to trap him inside. When Howard is unable to get out at the end of the episode, he yells the safety tips he was going to review from inside the outhouse.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: When Stu takes the watermelon that the babies believe is Dil away, he puts it in a pile with many similar-looking watermelons, and the babies have to find the watermelon they believe is Dil in the pile before it gets eaten. The only thing distinguishing the watermelon the babies believe is Dil from the other watermelons is the baby food they tried to feed it splattered onto it.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: Chas dresses up as a clown to entertain the babies. Naturally, Chuckie is afraid of him at first, given his fear of clowns, but Chas assures him that it's only him dressed as a clown, which only seems to slightly help.
  • Noodle Incident: After Lucy helps Betty change Phil's diaper and Howard chastises her for it, Betty mentions to Lucy that the last time Howard was safety monitor, he made 23 citizens arrests.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: When the babies play in the wading pool, Lil wears a pink bathing suit, while Phil wears a blue one.
  • Potty Emergency: Howard has one just before the watermelon-eating contest begins (and before he can review safety important tips to everyone). When Lou hears about this, he traps Howard in the port-a-potty so that everyone can enjoy the watermelon-eating contest in peace.
  • Punny Title: This episode's title is a pun on the saying, "Till' we meet again".
  • Safety Worst: Howard is the safety monitor for the block party, and he gets on everyone's nerves when he shouts safety rules through a megaphone, most especially Lou's. According to Betty, the last time Howard was safety monitor, he made 23 citizens arrests. Lou traps him in a port-a-potty near the end of the episode so that everyone can enjoy the watermelon-eating contest in peace, but when Howard is unable to get out, he yells the safety tips from inside the port-a-potty.
Lou: We're running a sack race, DeVille, not going to the moon!
  • Toilet Humor: After Didi changes Dil's diaper, Dil poops it, meaning she has to change him again.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: When the babies put the watermelon they believe is Dil down for a nap, they remember when Dil used to slobber and make funny noises when he slept, and Chuckie remembers when Dil would drool on his hand. The babies admit they miss Dil as a baby and want him back.
