Recap / Rugrats S 4 E 3 Vacation

Go To

The third episode of the fourth season of Rugrats (1991).

The babies go on vacation in Las Vegas with their families and have a series of misadventures there.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bird-Poop Gag: During Heimlich and Bob's show, a dove of theirs poops on a crew member.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with the song "Vacation" (performed by the Go-Go's at the beginning and by Angelica at the end.)
  • Call-Back: At the beginning of the episode, Chas is shown using his inhaler again.
  • The Cameo: Ramon from "Little Dude" can be seen in the audience at the circus.
  • Dodgy Toupee: Both Heimlich and Bob are revealed to wear toupees.
  • Extra-Long Episode: The third 22-minute episode of Season 4 (in a row, no less).
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Angelica's B-plot involves her trying to perform a song in front of a Las Vegas crowd. Her voice is very shrill, to the embarrassment of Stu. However, she sings decently with her rendition of "Vacation."
  • Horny Vikings: The Rugrats and their parents (as well as Grandpa Lou) stay at a Viking-themed hotel during their stay in Las Vegas—the kids even get to ride a longship.
  • Malaproper: The kids referring to Las Vegas as "Slots Vegas."
  • Mama Bear: When Didi, Betty and Charlotte learn that the kids are trying to get at Heimlich and Bob's white tigers, they immediately rush to the performance, even barging in without bothering to get tickets—and later on, when Didi notices that Tommy is walking towards the white tigers (to let them out of their cage), she swings by on a vine to save him.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Heimlich and Bob are obvious parodies of Siegfried and Roy.
  • Noodle Incident: Grandpa Lou mentions having gone to Las Vegas back in the 1950s and claimed that he won fifteen jackpots and was flown back home in first-class—but then Drew reveals that Trixie (his and Stu's mother) used to say that what really happened was that Lou lost "everything but his underwear" and had to come home by bus.
  • Papa Wolf: When Stu notices that the kids have wandered off, he rushes to retrieve them. The other dads (plus Lou) eventually join him over the course of the episode—and as soon as they learn that the kids are trying to get at Heimlich and Bob's white tigers, Grandpa Lou uses his casino winnings to buy himself and the dads' tickets to the show so they can save the kids.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Angelica decides to take the babies to see the "kitties" (Heimlich and Bob's white tigers) when she realizes that she'll be on TV that way.
  • Vacation Episode: The Rugrats and their families are all going on vacation together—and their destination is none other than Las Vegas, Nevada.
