Go To

The sixth episode of the first season of Rugrats (2021).

No License to Drive

When Stu and Didi take Angelica's car privileges away, Angelica needs the babies' help adjusting to live without her Cynthia car.

I Dream of Duffy

When Angelica discovers that she can use Stu's Duffy device to order any toy she asks for, Tommy and his friends must find a way to keep her under control.

"No License to Drive" provides examples of:

  • Aesop Amnesia: Angelica has to prove to Stu and Didi that she can drive slowly and carefully so they'll give her back her car. As soon as they allow her to drive her car again, she's back to her old crazy driving ways.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Angelica drives her Cynthia car carelessly at the beginning of this episode, which results in Stu and Didi taking her car away.
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: When Angelica tries to run away after getting her car back, she decides against it, realizing that she'll have to go back to Tommy's house to get food. Susie brings up that Chuckie usually keeps some carrot sticks, but Angelica doesn't like this idea.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: As soon as Angelica gets her car back, she goes back to her old crazy driving ways. She ends up driving into the gazebo and having a flower pot fall on the hood of her car.
  • Mythology Gag: The car that Angelica temporarily drives after Stu and Didi take her Cynthia car away resembles the Reptar Wagon from The Rugrats Movie.
  • Never My Fault: Stu and Didi take Angelica's Cynthia car away after she drives it in their house and knocks over the babies' city of blocks. Angelica tells the babies that Didi could have at least given her a warning, or a whole bunch of them, even though that's exactly what Didi did.
  • Noodle Incident: When Angelica tells Susie of her plight, Susie brings up that her parents took away a big striped lollipop she once had after she only licked half of it.
  • Parental Obliviousness: The adults are so engrossed in Didi's livestream that they're unaware of Angelica getting her car back against their wishes.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: At one point, Didi works on a DIY livestream called "Didi Does It" when Betty walks in, eating a sandwich. Didi then asks Betty if she's come to help her on her livestream, and Betty calls the trope by its name upon hearing Didi.
  • Vanity License Plate: Angelica's car has a license plate with her name on it.

"I Dream of Duffy" provides examples of:

  • Canon Foreigner:
    • Duffy, the expy of Amazon's Alexa, is not a pre-existing character from the original 1991 series and was created for this series.
    • Likewise, Daxton the deliveryman was created for the series.
  • Flying Postman: This series has Daxton, a deliveryman working for the Duffy delivery service who zips about from place-to-place using a propeller to deliver packages, seemingly at speeds matching plot. Presumably other Duffy deliverers travel the same way, but we only ever see Daxton.
  • Grandparental Obliviousness: Lou listens to music on some noise-cancelling headphones that Stu ordered, leaving himself oblivious to what Angelica's doing.
  • Imagine Spot: The babies have one where they ride a magic carpet in search of a genie.
  • Mythology Gag: Duffy was named for the late Jim Duffy, who animated for Klasky-Csupo for twenty years.
  • Never My Fault: When the adults find all the stuff that Angelica ordered, Angelica tries to blame her actions on the babies and Lou.
  • Odd Name Out: To get into Duffy's cave, the babies try to say Duffy's name. Tommy says Fluffy, Chuckie says Snuffy, Lil says Scruffy, and Phil says Eggface (which Lil notes isn't even close).
  • Open Sesame: In the babies' imagine spot, the babies get into a cave by saying "Open Duffy!".
  • Scream Discretion Shot: Angelica uses Stu's Duffy to order a large quantity of toys, as well as a miniature horse. After the adults discover what Angelica did, Drew punishes his daughter by not letting her keep any of the stuff she ordered (and plans on giving it all to charity)—Drew promises to pay Stu back for all the stuff Angelica ordered, but after Duffy reveals that grand total, an outside view of Tommy's house is shown as Drew screams in anguish.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: At the end of the episode, Drew promises to pay Stu back for all the stuff that Angelica ordered using Stu's Duffy. He asks Duffy for the total, but upon hearing it, the episode ends with a cut to the outside of Tommy's house and the viewers can only hear Drew's anguished scream.
  • You Are Grounded!: Drew grounds Angelica for ordering a large quantity of toys and a miniature horse with Duffy.
