Tropes

  • And Knowing Is Half the Battle: In the ending segment that aired on ABC, photos of the devastation of Landford caused by the tornado were shown during the credits underscored by "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Like many of the show's endings for the first few seasons, this scene has been cut out of some syndicated prints of the episode.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In this episode, Lanford is said to be in real-life Fulton County, close to the cities of Peoria and Bloomington. Later seasons put it in the fictional Lanford County, closer to Elgin and Rockford in the north end of the state.
  • Foreshadowing: Roseanne asks Dan what would happen if she died prematurely and Dan was left widowed and in charge of their kids.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Conners then prepare and the electricity goes out.
  • Suspiciously Apropos Music: "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" plays over the end credits as the disaster pictures of Lanford are shown.
  • Very Special Episode: The episode deals with a tornado impacting the family and their loved ones in dark times.
