Recap / Robotomy 03: "No Child Left Benign"

Go To

In order to dodge a difficult test, Blastus and Thrasher get themselves assigned to a special needs class for robots without violent tendencies. Unfortunately for them, that's the day that the class is scheduled to be launched into the sun.

Examples

  • Department of Redundancy Department: The teacher threatens that students who fail the standardized test will be sold to the Tygerian acid mines, where they will slowly be driven mad as the acid "eats through your face, eyes, brain, and face!"
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The Sunshine class are a class of robots with "faulty psycho chips" who "get their own bus" and are exempt from taking standardized tests in school. They're essentially a special-ed class.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: The episode ends with the characters all having a good, heartfelt laugh in the smoking ruins of their school.
  • Faux Horrific: Dreadnot tells the class if they fail their exam, they will sold as slaves to rot in an acid mine where they will be driven insane as the acids consume their bodies. No one in the class cares in the slightest... until Dreadnot also mentions they'll repeat the ninth grade, causing everybody to freak out.
  • Held Back in School: Failure to complete the No Child Left Benign standardized test is punished with, besides enslavement in the Tygerian acid mines, being forced to repeat the ninth grade.
  • Special Guest: Kate McKinnon as Mrs. Crunshine.
  • Take That!: Blastus tells Thrasher that books are dangerous because his grandmother died from reading. The book she read before she died was about teenaged vampires.
  • This Is Wrong on So Many Levels!: A variant. After Blastus vomits up the books he stuffs in his mouth and eats his own puke, Thrasher says "Well, this is all kinds of wrong."
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: Parodied. When commenting on their appearances for picture day, Blastus complains that, while Thrasher looks horrifying, he's cursed with beauty. Thrasher assures him that he's ugly on the inside, and that that's what counts.
    Thrasher: How do I look?
Blastus: Horrifying! You're lucky. I'm cursed with beauty.
Thrasher: Yeah, but you're ugly on the inside, and that's what counts.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After Blastus tries to eat a stack of books to gain their knowledge, an extended cut is show of his being violently sick, trying to shove the vomit back into his mouth, and then puking it all up again.

Repeating a grade.

Enslavement in acid mines barely merits a yawn. Being held back a grade, however...

How well does it match the trope?
