Robin is determined to get hold of the Great Pact of Nottingham, written proof of the Sheriff's treason, so when lovelorn Knight, John of York passes by Robin and the gang, begging them to take pity on him and save his girl, Robin formulates a plan that will kill two birds with one stone.

The Knight is sent off not only with his own money, but also some of the money that Robin's men recently took. Robin intends to rob everything back once it reaches the castle, by using York's silver to locate where the Sheriff's treasure - including the Pact - is hidden. Whilst Marian tends to Edward in the dungeons, she overhears Allan giving all of the outlaws' secret entrances and escape routes away.

Robin goes to Nottingham Castle to silence Allan, but Marian sees them and begs Robin not to kill him if he loves her. He finally admits his love for her and lets Allan go. Meanwhile, Edward escapes the dungeon and rushes to the Sheriff's quarters to get the Pact from his bedroom safe. Robin comes in, also to get the Pact. The Sheriff wakes up and chases Robin out of the room. Edward and Robin meet up with the gang.

As Edward and the gang flee, the Canon of Birkley steps in their path and threatens to kill Robin unless he hands over the Pact. Stepping in to defend Robin, Edward is stabbed. When Marian sees her father's body, Gisborne tries to comfort her in her distress, telling her that his feelings for her are stronger than ever, then moves to kiss her but she turns away. She rushes into her room where Robin waits. She collapses to the floor and Robin rushes to console her. He asks her to come and live in the forest with him and she finally accepts. They climb out of a window, and ride off together on a horse.

Tropes

  • Brick Joke: On learning that Robin plans to rescue Beatrice by giving John the necessary funds to pay off her bond, Much grumbles that a more suitable wedding present would be a toasting fork. When John and Beatrice are married at the end of the episode, Much presents him with a toasting fork as a wedding gift.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Marian's hair dagger finally comes into play when Edward accidentally takes it from her hair while she's visiting him in the dungeon, then uses it on the guard in order to escape his cell.
  • Continuity Nod: The outlaws break into the strongroom from The Booby and the Beast in an attempt to find the Pact (only to discover Allan has advised the Sheriff to empty it) and later Marian off-handedly mentions that Sir Edward was the Sheriff of Nottingham prior to Vaizey taking the position. This nicely explains why Edward was able to find the Pact in a hidden compartment behind a wall hanging in the Sheriff's room — clearly, he used it himself back when he was Sheriff.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Good thing the Sheriff decided to take an afternoon nap at the same time Edward escapes his jail cell!
  • Corrupt Church: The Canon of Birkley, who takes "confession" from young tavern girls (a quick scene has him throwing a girl money as he leaves her bedroom), is in league with the Sheriff of Nottingham, and plans to marry off Beatrice (who he refers to as his property) to a man she doesn't love for a greater sum of money than John of York can provide.
  • Damsel in Distress: Beatrice, a young woman held against her will by a canon of the church.
  • Flat Character: Poor Beatrice is more of a plot-point than a person — she gets only a handful of lines (most of which are "John!") and is an entirely passive character throughout the story.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Beatrice wears a simple wreath of flowers in her wedding to John of York, emphasizing her youth and girlhood.
  • Foil: Robin and Guy's difference in character has never been more pronounced than in the wake of Edward's death — though each one wants to comfort Marian, Guy takes advantage of her vulnerability and tries to kiss her before again pressing his suit, while Robin simply waits in her room, gently holds her and then passes on her father's last words.
  • Love Confession: In the middle of his brawl with Allan, Robin tells Marian that he loves her, without even realizing that he's said it. As she points out afterwards, it's taken him a long time to say it out loud.
  • MacGuffin: As in the last episode, the Pact of Nottingham.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: Edward utters this trope by name after he's fatally stabbed.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: There hasn't been any fight on this show as intense or as visceral as the one between Allan and Robin when the latter comes to the decision to kill his former friend in order to protect Marian.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted with the arrival of a character called John of York, temporarily joining the regular Little John among the main cast.
  • Parting-Words Regret: A quintessential example, to the point where you know Edward's is marked for death as soon as Marian says she's ashamed of him. When she's reunited with Robin after seeing her father's body, she bitterly confesses that her last words to him were said in anger.
  • Please Wake Up: Marian uses this trope by name when she finds her father has died.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Time is up for Sir Edward, the show's most significant recurring guest star. He dies trying to save Robin from the treacherous Canon, and perishes in the attempt.
  • Wedding Finale: Not of the show in its entirety, but the very last scene of this episode is devoted to John and Beatrice's forest wedding.
  • Wham Episode: Sir Edward is Killed Off for Real and Marian goes to live with Robin in Sherwood Forest.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Edward admits to Robin during his Final Speech that he never truly understood why Marian loved him so much.
