- Agony of the Feet: Jane spends the episode suffering from an ingrown toenail but refuses to see a podiatrist and the pain gets to the point that she resorts to having Ian crudely snip it with pruning shears.

- New Old Flame: Dr. Ian Faulkner, the never before mentioned love of Maura's life. Ian is wanted for questioning by Interpol because he makes a habit of illegally smuggling much needed drugs into third world countries. Maura worked with him for two years in Ethiopia and loves him though she knows they can never be together. She helps him get drugs to smuggle to Africa and lets him leave at the end of the episode, but sheds a few tears over him.
