Recap / Ridonculous Race Hello And Dubai

Go To

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Subverted. Emma laughs hysterically at Noah's mockery of Chris, but she admits in private that she didn't get it all.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: After finishing washing the windows, Taylor notices that there's bird poop on her boot, and she takes it off to wipe the poop on Kelly's shoulder.
  • Boring, but Practical: Jay and Mickey manage to get 3rd place because they got to the Chill Zone in a normal taxi, instead of riding one made of gold: turns out the normal ones are much faster.
  • The Cameo: Golden mini statues of Chris McLean can be seen sold at one of the stores near the Chill Zone.
  • City of Gold: Dubai is portrayed as this. Even most of the taxis are made of gold.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After Taylor crosses the line one too many times, Kelly throws the switch on the window washing platform, suspending Taylor several feet up in the air.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: In their conversation on the plane, Dwayne tells Kelly that her Hands-Off Parenting approach has led to Taylor being a Spoiled Brat. Kelly gets offended and throws a cup of water in his face; however, she later realizes that he was right.
  • Expy: The Tennis Menace is a Dalek that shoots tennis balls and says "PARTICIPATE!"
  • Fauxdian Slip: Emma has one of these during a confessional.
Emma: Remember sis, we're here to finish first. No surrender, Noah distractions.
Kitty: Did you just say "Noah"?
    Emma: Zero distractions!
  • Food Slap: When Dwayne claims that Taylor was "born rotten", Kelly throws her cup of water in his face.
  • Graceful Loser: Kelly and Taylor take losing very well, as they mended their relationship.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: When Taylor complains about having bird poop on her boot, there is a closeup of said poop after Taylor takes her boot off.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When Noah takes a crack at Chris McLean, Emma laughs hysterically, but admits in the confessional that she didn't get the joke.
  • Oblivious to Their Own Description: Emma initially opposes an alliance, due to Noah being a snarky know-it-all.
Emma: Do you have any idea what it's like to be around someone like that?
    Kitty: I can't imagine.
[Emma realizes and then glares at her]
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "hello and goodbye".
  • Rejected Apology: In a confessional, Kelly tries to apologize to Taylor for humiliating her on international TV, but Taylor bluntly and sarcastically rejects her mother's apology.
  • Rescue Romance: They already liked each other before, but Noah saving Emma's life really helped start them on the path to romance.
  • Series Continuity Error: Kitty tells Owen that Emma's breakup with Jake occurred three years ago. But in "French is An Eiffel Language" she says that their breakup was two years ago. It's likely she misspoke in either this episode or that.
  • Shipper on Deck: Owen and Kitty push the idea of an alliance so that Noah and Emma can get to know each other better.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Kitty does genuinely want Emma to be happy, but she's also well-aware that a relationship with Noah would distract Emma from constantly ordering her around.
  • Shout-Out: The teams playing tennis on the rooftop helipad of the Burj Al Arab is a reference to a 2005 publicity stunt by the hotel in which professional tennis players Andre Agassi and Roger Federer played a match on the hotel's helipad.
  • Skewed Priorities: What causes Kelly and Taylor to lose. Had they went to the chill zone before going shopping, they wouldn't have been eliminated.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Kelly and Taylor during the Squeegee challenge.
Taylor: Wipe faster, Mom! We're losing!
Kelly: (through her teeth) Yelling won't help, sweetie!
Taylor: Ummm, I yell at the maid all the time, then she wipes faster. I think I know what I'm doing.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Geoff cheers on the Adversity Twins during the tennis machine challenge. Brody and the Rockers also join in Geoff's clapping after the twins complete the challenge.
  • Tough Love: After Taylor cleans her boot off on Kelly's sleeve, it prompts Kelly to throw the lever on the window washing platform as Taylor is getting off, leaving her suspended in mid-air. Kelly refuses to get Taylor down until she apologizes.
