Recap / Ridonculous Race Bjorken Telephone

Go To

In Iceland, the teams have to memorise a Icelandic phase, run across an active geyser field, and repeat it to a local in order to receive their next instructions. After receiving them, the teams have to choose between finding a fossil in an icy cave or eating an authentic Icelandic feast.

Tropes

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Emma rudely tells Kitty not to help, refusing to acknowledge she did good on a challenge. Kitty goes along with it and doesn't help on the fossil challenge, forcing Emma to do all the work herself and exhaust herself.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Laurie angrily curses Dwayne when he takes the Vegans' fossil, forcing her and Miles to eat meat in order to stay in the race. This also infuriates Laurie to the point where she beats up Don for tricking her into eating meat in a non-elimination round.
  • Camera Abuse: When the Fashion Bloggers make their geyser run, Jen's screeching breaks one of the cameras.
  • Foreign Queasine: One of the Either/Or challenges involves eating an Icelandic feast of putrefied shark (Hákarl), pickled herring, charred ram, broiled puffin and singed sheep head (Svið). Several teams who chose the feast struggled with the meal; even Extreme Omnivore Owen had trouble stomaching the feast, despite eating the "Brunch of Disgustiness" in Total Drama Island.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: The first challenge consists in the teams correctly saying a sentence in Icelandic, with perfect pronunciation, after crossing a geyser field.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While attempting to recite the phrase, Dwayne gets it badly wrong, and says something offensive in Icelandic completely unintentionally, which causes the Swan Lady to slap him.
  • The Load: Geoff is forced to do most of the work for The Surfer Dudes, since Brody's still heavily debilitated from his speedboat stunt the previous episode.
  • My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels: During one of his many attempts to repeat "Please give me my next travel tip" in Icelandic, Dwayne somehow manages to instead say "Please give me my travel, A**hole." No wonder he got slapped.
  • Never My Fault: Mother and Daughter team earn a one-hour penalty, since Taylor did not go back across the geyser field with her mother. Yet, she gets yelled at by Taylor, even though she sent Kelly to do the challenge again.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The Icelandic model in the first challenge bears quite a resemblance to Björk right down to her iconic swan dress.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, this isn't the first time Dwayne's been cursed by someone.
  • Plot Hole: Tom and Jen receive their Travel Tip for the translation challenge by simply complimenting the Icelandic model's dress and not actually doing the challenge. They suffer no penalty for this.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the musician Björk.
  • Pun-Based Title: Besides the above-mentioned reference, the episode's title is also a play on the children's game "broken telephone". One of the challenges involves hearing a spoken phrase, then repeating that phrase to another person, although the contestants say the phrase out loud to the Swan Lady rather than whispering it to her.
  • Running Gag: Dwayne mangling the Icelandic phase in the first part of the challenge.
  • Shout-Out: Ryan and Stephanie eat a bowel and kiss in the middle, referencing the iconic spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp.
  • Suddenly Voiced: After being silent for the first four episodes, Crimson finally has her first spoken lines in this episode.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Kelly, Taylor and Miles are grossed out by the Icelandic feast, so much so that each of them vomit twice.
