Rick and Morty travel to Akihabara to find a very specific type of screw for the toaster that Rick is working on.

Tropes:

  • Animesque: Played with. Despite being a genuine anime from Japan the character designs are unchanged from the main series (even less so than in the other anime shorts). However, aside from all the stereotypical anime tropes within the story and setting, the animation is more jerky than the main show and character movement is similar to typical anime series.
  • Big Red Button: The mecha's Self-Destruct Mechanism is controlled by a big red button in plain sight of Morty who cannot resist to press it.
  • Brick Joke: When Rick and Morty first enter the tunnel to Akihabara they are startled to see a yokai, it is shrouded in shadows but it's pretty clearly a kappa. At the very end of the episode, a kappa finally reaches the Smiths' house and finds Summer sitting in front of it...
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Rick doesn't remember Q-saku. Ironically he does remember Milk-chan being the daughter of the electronics seller.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Rick and Morty get separated in Akihabara after the latter becomes smitten with the maid Milk-chan. Even Q-saku is briefly distracted from his grudge on Rick upon entering the maid cafe.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: Yamada Q-saku makes his entrance this way.
  • Expressive Accessory: At the maid cafe Morty wears demon wings that flap whenever he's excited.
  • Mech vs. Beast: Rick and Morty fight in a giant Humongous Mecha against a giant Yōkai.
  • Older Than They Look: Morty is apalled to find out that the youthful-looking Milk-chan is over 30 years old.
  • Paper Destruction of Anger: Rick tears up Q-saku's maid cafe service card when he was just one visit away from a special service. This causes Q-saku to unleash a Yokai on the city.
  • Projectile Toast: A variant in which the toaster itself becomes the projectile.
  • Rocket Punch: Rick's Humongous Mecha fires its left forearm at the yokai.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Stinger: Q-saku is still alive in some strange void and screams he'll have his revenge on Rick.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Rick and Q-saku (who was holed up in his lab for 30 years thanks to Rick) are pissed that Akihabara has changed completely, and they express the exact same complaints at first.
  • Take That, Audience!: Rick is disgusted by how much Akihabara has changed in 30 years, but Morty becomes obsessed with a cosplay Maid Cafe. After a giant mecha vs. yokai battle, Rick ends up destroying the city. When Morty asks what they're going to do about the destruction, Rick passes it off as not his problem, because the actual people who live in Akihabara are never going to see this anime.
  • Trampled Underfoot: There are clearly casualties when the giant yokai starts walking across the city.
  • Translation Convention: Like the other anime shorts, the dialogue is in Japanese via the show's official Japanese dub cast (with English subtitles), despite the opening and closing scenes still taking place in America.
  • Unknown Rival: Unbeknowst to Rick, he made Q-saku into his antagonist some 30 years ago.
  • Villain Holds the Leash: Q-saku controlling his giant yokai.
  • We Meet Again: Q-saku swears revenge on Rick in the closing scene.
  • Your Costume Needs Work: A kappa tries to attack Summer but because it's Halloween season she doesn't take it for real and shows appreciation for the great costume.
