Ben's Extreme Doormat-ness makes firing Dr. Smallwood and maintaining his interior design choices difficult. Kate and D'Arcy bond, during which Kate worries that she might be pregnant. Mike and Liv feel that Abigail Hodges is innocent and search for new clues. Harry takes Goliath's hybrid-offspring egg home to raise.

Tropes:

  • Always a Bigger Fish: Lisa Casper easily kills the Galvan/Powell mooks in her own pursuit of Harry and Asta.
  • Blatant Lies: Harry telling Asta that he doesn't know why the train's window is broken.
  • Born from a Dead Woman: Harry destroys Goliath's fossilized corpse, revealing a large egg.
  • Breathless Non Sequitur: Murder doesn't faze Harry.
Harry: I may have killed the bad woman. It's okay. I threw her out the window. She's gone. Did you get my ice cream sandwich?
  • Bullying a Dragon: Violinda tells Lisa Casper that she wouldn't be able to afford a Goliath painting and ends up with a bullet in her leg.
  • Chained to a Railway: Harry mentions this to Asta, asking why they have to ride on the Amtrak train for two days. He says that if somebody were to tie a lady to the tracks, that if they tied her lengthwise, it could derail them. She tells them that it could, but it won't, "because this isn't a silent movie, Harry."
  • Concealing Canvas: Sam Hodges had hidden notes about Galvan/Powell Group behind an anatomy diagram in office, taking after his favorite literary detective. Mike and Liv find it after checking every other painting in the room.
  • Creepy Doll: Liv is creeped out by some dolls Abigail Hodges is selling and covers them with a sheet.
  • Death by Falling Over: The Brazilian sign-painter hits his head on a rock when Goliath steps out onto Earth.
  • Desk Sweep of Rage: Sheriff Mike swipes everything off Deputy Liv's desk with his work-impedingly numbed arm.
  • Disposing of a Body: Harry tosses Lisa Casper's decapitated body out the train window.
  • Donut Mess with a Cop: Someone online mockingly turns Liv's UFO footage into a "cops and donuts" meme without even knowing the poster was a cop.
  • Due to the Dead: Humans Asta and Violinda are horrified when Harry smashes up Goliath's fossilized corpse.
  • File Mixup: Dr. Smallwood tells Ben that he has aggressive colon cancer. He doesn't; Mrs. Patel does.
  • Flashback Echo: The leg press equipment causes D'Arcy to flash back to her career-ending injury.
  • Flashback-Montage Realization: Asta flashes back to Liv's sketch of Max's hostage-taker when Lisa Casper walks into Violinda's gallery.
  • Internal Reveal: Lisa Casper learns that Harry is the alien she'd been tracking just before he kills her.
  • Interspecies Romance: Alien Goliath and human Violinda.
  • In the Back: The men from Galvan/Powell Group die from gunshot wounds to the back.
  • Mister Seahorse: While Goliath's species does not have gender, he was referred to as male on Earth. The episode refers to him as having been pregnant.
  • No-Sell: Harry requires little exertion to defeat Lisa Casper's hand-to-hand combat. He tries to fake a reaction at the end, but it's entirely unconvincing.
  • Not Quite Dead: Despite getting thrown through a glass skylight, Lisa Casper survives with no major injury.
  • Off with Her Head!: Lisa Casper gets decapitated by a train traveling in the opposite direction.
  • On a Scale from One to Ten: Ellen uses a location-adjusted hotness scale for men.
Ellen: He's a Patience six, which is a Denver four, which is a California one.
  • One Drink Will Kill the Baby: Kate immediately stops drinking just in case she's actually pregnant.
  • Posthumous Character: Goliath had died six months before Harry got to New York.
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: Lisa Casper murders the pizza guy in cold blood then nonchalantly grabs a slice.
  • Stalker Shot: The reveal that Galvan/Powell men are following Harry and Asta around New York.
  • Surprise Party: Ben arranges a surprise birthday party at Harry's cabin to convince him to return to the clinic.
  • Survivor Guilt: Dan's friend Joe was killed when they were ambushed in Vietnam and despite doctors telling him there was nothing he could have done, he couldn't shake the guilt for a long time.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: New Yorkers don't pay any mind to Harry's alien form because they've Seen It All.
  • Verbal Backspace: Dan regrets asking Asta to talk to him.
Dan: I don't like it when you're quiet. Makes me nervous.
Asta: The alien we went to see was dead. But it gave birth to an egg, and now it's in Harry's bag.
Dan: I liked it more when you were quiet.
  • Wham Shot: The final shot of the episode is the egg cracking, which occurs while everyone Locked Out of the Loop is present at Harry's cabin.

Don't Tell Mrs. Patel... Yikes

In "Escape from New York" from "Resident Alien," Dr. Smallwood accidentally mixes up Mayor Ben Hawthorne's file with that of a woman named Mrs. Patel and tells him that he has an aggressive form of colon cancer. Before he can really process this, Nurse Ellen Cho shows up and explains that Dr. Smallwood mixed up the files. Dr. Smallwood says that this happens sometimes. "Should it?" asks Ben, pointedly. "No," deadpans Ellen.

How well does it match the trope?
