Recap / Regular Show S7E1 "Dumptown U.S.A."

Go To

Mordecai runs away to a city populated by men who are so depressed from being dumped that they have given up on life, and Rigby must risk his relationship with Eileen to get his buddy back.

The episode has the following examples:

  • Beard of Sorrow: Mordecai, along with pretty much anyone on Dumptown, USA sports one.
  • Becoming the Mask: It's heavily implied that Eileen's fake break-up with Rigby became real.
  • The Bus Came Back: Sad Sax (from the episode of the same name) returns.
  • Character Development: For the first time in the series, Mordecai decides to take a break from caring about girls and will enjoy being single for a while.
  • Chekhov's Gun/Foreshadowing: In the opening, Rigby and Eileen are playing a video game where they have to jump a drawbridge on Segway-like vehicles. Which is exactly what he and Mordecai have to do to escape Dumptown, USA.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the many times Benson spent time in Dumptown, USA was after Audrey broke up with him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite Rigby being lazy and he hardly cleans up unless he's working, even he was disgusted by the way everyone in Dumptown USA were living their life.
  • Gone Horribly Right: While Rigby manages to get to Dumptown, however, he initially wanted to stage a false break-up with Eileen to get there, however, Eileen made it so genuine that Rigby did not expect it and thought it was real.
  • The Hedonist: Everyone in Dumptown USA has given up on living life and just eat, play, and sleep without pursuing any sort of interest any more.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Dumptown, USA is stocked with everything someone going through a breakup would need to forget about it. So much, in fact, that most people never come back.
  • Not Himself: Mordecai's two weeks in Dumpsville have changed him so radically that Rigby barely even knows who he's talking to anymore and that the change was certainly not for Mordecai's better. It takes this speech to snap Mordecai out of it, reminding Mordecai that CJ is only one woman out of a whole planet of many and living this way is not the answer:
Rigby: You're being ridiculous! All this because CJ dumped you?!
    Mordecai: (playing dumb) CJ, who?
Rigby: ...You've changed, man. I don't even know who I'm talking to, anymore.
Mordecai: (in denial) Nah, man, you don't understand! This place is good for me! It's given me a chance to rethink my life, you know?
Rigby: Look, I know things have been hard for you, but CJ's just one girl, man. There's so many more out there! But, you're not gonna meet 'em if you're trapped in this place forever.
Mordecai: Look, I don't see what the big deal is. I've only been here a couple of days!
Rigby: (Utter disbelief) "A couple of days"?! Dude, you've been here for two weeks!
Mordecai: No way! That can't be right, I just got here! Right, guys?
(The other residents of the building mutter agreement and some other forms of words)
Rigby: See, dude? Everyone is so out of it because there's no concept of time here. You're wasting your life away! Look at yourself! (Lifts saxophone to let Mordecai look at himself in a reflection to see what he's become. Needless to say, he's very alarmed to see himself look like such a mess.)
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Unlike in "Laundry Woes", Mordecai grows long brown hair and a beard during his time in Dumptown.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Eileen has to give a pretty brutal one to Rigby so their false breakup is convincing. So much that Rigby believes for a while it was real.
  • Shout-Out: Mordecai looks just like The Dude.
  • Trash of the Titans: Mordecai and his roommates just throw their stuff on the floor, never bothering to clean up afterwards. They have a dog to eat the scraps off the floor, but he's too full to eat anything anymore.
  • What Have I Become?: Mordecai when Rigby shows him his reflection, making him realize what a mess he has become.
  • Year Outside, Hour Inside: At Dumptown, USA, people lose all concept of time and think they've been there a few days, instead of a few weeks or longer. Rigby states that it's because everyone is so depressed over being dumped that they've lost all concept of time.
