Recap / Regular Show S 04 Ep 20 Fool Me Twice

Go To

Mordecai, Rigby and Benson find themselves transported into a Japanese game show where no one has ever won, and only one person has ever survived.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • Mordecai and Rigby wish to go on Fool Me Twice, only to learn that the stunts are real and people actually do end up getting hurt.
    • Mordecai and Rigby get to go to Space Camp. Unfortunately, they're stuck with Benson having the time of his life.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Before he self-destructs, Announcer-Bot says in Japanese, "I'm sorry, Master Shinehara."
  • Deadly Game: Mordecai, Rigby and Benson participate in "Fool Me Once", which involves a deadly obstacle course and a crazed host who punches people in the face hard enough to kill them if they fail to complete it in time. Before the course begins, the host shows a montage of all the people he's punched in the face, with only one of them surviving (albeit with a disfigured face).
  • Facial Horror: The sole surviving contestant has his face horribly disfigured.
Reporter: How does it feel to be the only contestant who didn't die?
Contestant: I can't feel me face, but at least I'm alive!
  • Karmic Death: Shinehara is killed by falling into the lava, which is fitting considering how many contestants he ended up killing in his show.
  • Look Behind You: Benson fools Shinehara for the third (and final) time by pointing behind him and saying "Look! It's Mt. Fuji!" While Shinehara is distracted, Mordecai, Rigby and, Benson push him into a swinging taiko drum to knock him into the lava, killing him.
  • A Molten Date with Death: The host meets his end when Mordecai, Rigby and Benson manage to fool him for a third time, causing his own fist to punch him in the face as he's falling into the lava at the end of the course.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mordecai, Rigby and Benson have this reaction when the host of "Fool Me Once" reveals that almost everyone who has been punched by him has died.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode is a parody of a real-life game show called I Survived a Japanese Gameshow.
    • The Bumper Ballz section of the Baka Blitz is near-identical to the Bumper Balls minigame from Mario Party.
    • Shinehara stretches out his fist to punch Mordecai, Rigby, and Benson like Monkey D. Luffy of One Piece.
  • Tempting Fate: Before the Baka Blitz begins, Rigby assures Benson that nobody really gets hurt on TV. Almost immediately after, the host shows a montage of previous contestants getting punched in the face. Only one person who got punched didn't die.
