Recap / Regular Show S 04 Ep 05150 Piece Kit

Go To

Benson's old hair metal band, Hair to the Throne, comes to town to play a concert at a park. When they claim that a drum machine played a very complex drum solo on their first album instead of Benson, he seeks out to prove once and for all that he himself played it on the album.

Tropes:

  • Broken Pedestal: Mordecai and Rigby lose all respect for Hair to the Throne when they sabotage Benson's drum kit, even throwing their backstage passes to the ground.
  • Hairstyle Malfunction: Hair to the Throne are, ironically, revealed to be wearing wigs when Benson blows them off at the end of his solo.
  • Hypocrite: Benson's former bandmates mock him for being bald, even though all three of them are bald themselves.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Benson's bandmates were jealous of him for playing the 150-piece solo and feared that he would steal the glory from the rest of them, so they fired him from the band and replace him with a drum machine, in which the band goes on to say was responsible for the solo.
  • I Choose to Stay: When Benson completes his solo, his ex-bandmates realize the error of their ways and offer him to rejoin the band. Benson declines, content with his job at the Park, much to Mordecai and Rigby's confusion.
  • Impossible Task: The 150-piece drum solo is said to be this, and it was thought that no man can recreate it since the last person who attempted it burst into flames.
  • Man Versus Machine: Benson's replacement in Hair to the Throne, a sentient drum machine, tries to stop him from completing the drum solo during the climax. Benson wins, but the strain on his body is immense.
  • Nobody Loves the Bassist: Mordecai can identify the other Hair to the Throne members by name while he simply calls their bassist "The bass player".
  • invoked The Pete Best: In-Universe. Benson was fired from Hair to the Throne after they recorded their first album and attributed his drumming to a drum machine. The rest of the band exploded in popularity while Benson faded into obscurity and wallowed away in a dead-end job at the Park.
  • Reality Is Unrealistic: In-Universe; the 150-piece drum solo is widely assumed to be the result of a drum machine thanks to its immense complexity, with the last guy who tried replicating it live bursting into flames. However, as Benson proves, not only is the feat possible with live instruments, but Benson himself played it that way on Hair to the Throne's album.

150-Piece Kit

Attempting to finish the 150-piece kit drum solo causes Benson's skeleton to start burning up, as he had been warned prior.

How well does it match the trope?
