Recap / Regular Show S 03 Ep 33 Diary

Go To

Mordecai and Rigby accidentally break the lock on Margaret's diary and need to fix it before she gets the wrong idea.

Tropes:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Guardian of Margaret's diary, a giant version of Margaret in a gladiator outfit.
  • Call-Back: Mordecai advises against putting the diary in the microwave to dry the glue, bringing up the events of "It's Time".
  • Curiosity Killed the Cast: Skips warns Mordecai and Rigby not to open their eyes until the ritual to restore the diary is complete. Rigby, of course, can't help but peek, which summons the Guardian, who goes on a rampage and can only be stopped by giving it a secret each.
  • Disaster Dominoes: In fighting over the diary, Mordecai and Rigby break off the lock. They manage to glue it back together, but in their attempt to make it dry faster, they end up setting it on fire. Rigby tries to douse the flames with what turns out to be lighter fluid, reducing it to ashes.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow, no one realized Eileen was in the apartment until Margaret reveals so to Mordecai and Rigby after the fact.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: This seems to be a mostly unimportant gag episode, right up until the climax when Skips and Rigby reveal their secrets, Skips hinting at a Dark and Troubled Past regarding a lost love, and Rigby expressing feelings for Eileen for the first time.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: When Rigby tries drying the glue faster by putting the diary in the microwave, Mordecai remembers the events of "It's Time" and how putting clocks in the microwave resulted in Rigby's death, so he bluntly declares they're not putting anything in the microwave.
  • Painful Confession: Zig-Zagged. Mordecai and Rigby (while watering Margaret's plants while she's away) accidentally destroy her diary. Skips shows them a spell to transfer Margaret's diary secrets into a different diary, making an exact copy. The spell backfires when Rigby skips a step and releases the guardian of Margaret's secrets. The only way to defeat the guardian is for Skips, Mordecai, and Rigby to each reveal a dark secret. Skips' secret plays this trope straight, as he reveals that he always skips to remember a woman he loved once. The other two are Played for Laughs: Mordecai reveals that he's been sleeping on two mattresses for years, with the second one being one that was meant for Rigby (he never told him because sleeping like that is way too comfortable). Rigby's confession?
Rigby: I THINK EILEEN LOOKS HOT WITHOUT HER GLASSES ON!
  • The Reveal: Three significant ones (and 1 lesser one) in a row.
    • Skips reveals why he skips all the time. He had a girlfriend who would skip everywhere, and when she died, Skips decided to only skip to honor her.
    • Mordecai reveals that when he and Rigby were ordering beds for the house, he stole Rigby's mattress and has been using both ever since, which is why Rigby sleeps on a trampoline.
    • Rigby reveals that he likes Eileen.
    • … and Eileen, who was there watering Margaret's plants, heard the whole thing.
  • Wham Line: "I THINK EILEEN IS HOT WITHOUT HER GLASSES ON!!"
  • What You Are in the Dark: When Mordecai realizes that the book he has is Margaret's diary, he immediately closes it and refuses to take a peek at it.
  • You Didn't See That: After Skips successfully restores the diary.
Mordecai: Woah, it looks exactly like Margaret's! Skips, how can we repay you?
Skips: Do you remember that stuff I said about why I skip?
    Mordecai: Yeah.
    Skips: No you don't.
