Recap / Regular Show S 03 Ep 08 House Rules

Go To

Mordecai and Rigby are given an updated version of the house rules by Benson, only to find that many of the new rules target and inconvenience them in some fashion (they can't put their feet up on the coffee table, put food on it, and they can't play video games anymore). When they argue with Benson over the rules, Benson tells them that if they don't sign off on the new rules, they can't live in the house, so the duo decide to move out, vowing to live without any rules. However, just because they want to live without any rules, doesn't mean that it'll stop others from enforcing their rules upon them and later find out that living without any rules sucks when people take advantage of the anarchy.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Alien Blood: The unicorns explode into cyan-colored, sparkly goo after being killed like they did in their debut episode. Kevin, the crazy prank caller, explodes into the same cyan goo before his flying phone booth blows up, despite not being a unicorn.
  • An Aesop: Rules suck sometimes, but living without them is no better. But if there's rules you really don't want to follow, just get rid of them.
  • Anarchy Is Chaos: Benson claims that life without rules is this and it turns out he's right; The No Rules World is awesome at first, but when jerks like the No Rules Guy use the freedom to abuse others and natural laws like the space-time continuum, as well as the dead staying dead are broken, its not fun for people like Mordecai and Rigby, who just want to chill out and not get bossed around.
  • Ax-Crazy: The No Rules Guy, Kevin, the Unicorns, the guys playing punchies, and Günther, this tattooed a-hole who tried beat Mordecai and Rigby up with a baseball bat for sitting in his bench.
  • Back from the Dead: According to the No Rules Guy, people from someone's past and future can end up appearing in the No Rules World; this leads to the Unicorns from season one coming back.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Downplayed; Mordecai and Rigby end up signing Benson's rules at the end because no matter how weird or arbitrary they may seem, living without any rules is not any better. However, they are able to play things into their favor by getting rid of the "no video games" rule, which Benson can't remember because he had written and added so many other rules and Mordecai and Rigby act dumb by pretending not to remember.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Mordecai and Rigby, you two wished to have a place with no rules? How does the No Rules Land sound, huh?
  • Batter Up!: While struggling to find a place to sleep, Mordecai and Rigby rest on a bench, only to nearly get beaten up with a bat wielded by a big, tattooed guy named Günther.
  • Big "NO!": The No Rules Guy yells this when the "no video games" page ripped out from Benson's rule book lands on his lap, causing him to explode.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: After Mordecai and Rigby leave the No Rules World, the No Rules Guy grumbles to himself "hmmph, hmmph" as he proceeds to play video games by himself.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: The "Rules vs. No Rules" argument. The rules that inconvenience Mordecai and Rigby are there for good reasons; people can't have two guys sleeping outside their businesses and even some of Benson's odd rules make some sense since he's had bad experiences with prank calls, Unicorns, and people playing punchies and rock-paper-scissors. However, Mordecai and Rigby are right that the new rules are mostly targeted at them, such as no food on the table in the living room and no video games. And while the No Rules Place is an awesome place to live, it attracts obnoxious people who can't be stopped because there aren't any set laws. At least until Mordecai learns that there's no rules against rules...
  • Brick Joke: Mordecai and Rigby decide not live in the house anymore because of Benson's additions to the rule book, such as no video games. They come back at the end, agreeing to Benson's new rules, except the no video games one, which they ripped out and left in the No Rules World.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: When Benson's rules are said out loud in the No Rules World, the people breaking the newly establish rules get killed.
  • Call-Back: Several of Benson's new rules refer back to previous episodes:
  • Car Fu: The Unicorns return in a flying car, which they use to try to kill Mordecai and Rigby, only to end up hitting Mordecai's older self.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A copy of Benson's rules ends up being used to defeat the psychos who get pissed off at Mordecai and Rigby.
  • Control Freak: When Mordecai asks Benson what he and Rigby are supposed to do since they're not allow to play videos games anymore, Benson replies: "Work. You're supposed to work.", as if he expects them to work all day and not do anything fun in their free time. He didn't tell whoever played the harpsicord that they couldn't play anymore, but had no problem banning video games.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: Yelling out the rules in the No Rules World causes some of the rule breakers to explode.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Everyone in the No Rules World tries to kill Mordecai and Rigby when the the two try to warn the No Rules Guy about the Unicorns, because they were seen as telling the No Rules Guy what to do.
  • Eldritch Location: The No Rules World is a grey void where people can think up whatever they want, do whatever they want, and the laws that keep the universe in order are easily broken.
  • Eye Scream: Something happened to the No Rules Guy's right eye, requiring him to wear an eyepatch; Mordecai and Rigby threaten to ruin his other eye with a laser pointer if he doesn't let them leave the No Rules World.
  • Foil: The No Rules Guy and Benson. Both act like jerks through the use or disuse of rules, but while Benson has good motivation behind his Control Freak nature with the house rules, the No Rules Guy exploits anarchy just to be a jerk.
  • For the Evulz: The No-Rules Guy shows his true nature when he hits Rigby and steals Mordecai's wallet for no reason, justifying his actions by saying there are no rules saying he can't do that.
  • Future Loser: Due to the No Rules World not enforcing the Never the Selves Shall Meet trope, Mordecai and Rigby meet a future version of Mordecai who's old, fat, balding, and depressed because something happened to Rigby, leaving him all alone.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Mordecai and Rigby defeat the No Rules Guy when he and everyone in the No Rules World turn on them by exploiting the reality-bending nature of the void against them via calling out Benson's rules, which makes everyone who's breaking them disappear or explode.
    • Mordecai and Rigby get around Benson's new rule against video games by merely ripping out the page it was on in the book; Benson is then unable to remember the rule because he had added so many new rules, leaving him angry and confused as Mordecai and Rigby pretend not to remember.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Mordecai and Rigby burst into Benson's office, yelling at him for banning video games, Benson points out the no yelling rule— by yelling it out at them.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • As shown in Call-Back up above, Benson has good reasons behind his additions to the house rule book.
    • While they could've been nicer, the owners of the businesses that wouldn't let Mordecai and Rigby sleep outside their places are completely justified in not wanting two random dudes sleeping where they work.
  • Loophole Abuse: Mordecai discovers that there are no rules against rules in the No Rules World, allowing him to summon Benson's rule book which allows them to defeat the No Rules Guy's posse
  • Misblamed: The resurrected Unicorns blame Mordecai and Rigby for killing them when it was really Benson that blew them up.
  • Never the Selves Shall Meet: Averted; this is one of the many rules broken by No Rules World, as Mordecai and Rigby end up meeting an older version of Mordecai who pops out of nowhere.
  • No Name Given: The No-Rules Guy never reveals his name.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: When Mordecai and Rigby complain how all the new rules are targeting them, Benson points out the rule "no harpsichord playing after 10 PM", which Mordecai and Rigby agree is a good rule and state that its that only rule that they're going to sign off on.
  • Puff of Logic: When rules are said out loud in the No Rules World, whoever is breaking the new rules explodes or vanishes.
  • Reality Warper: Whoever is in the No Rules World can bend reality to their will.
  • Squishy Wizard: Despite his reality manipulating powers, the No Rules Guy is still easily defeated after Mordecai and Rigby thin out his army of rule-breakers, tackle him, and make him lead them out of the No Rules World by threatening to blind him with a laser pointer.
  • This Is My Chair: Mordecai and Rigby nearly get beaten by a crazy guy named Günther for sitting on his bench.
