Why Are We Here?
Written By: Burnie Burns
Red soldiers Simmons and Grif discuss why they're posted in Blood Gulch, while Blue soldiers Church and Tucker spy on them with the sniper rifle and bicker over who gets to use the rifle.
Tropes applying to this episode:
- And Then What?: The crux of Grif and Simmons' discussion; Even if one team won, all they'd get for their troubles are two bases in the middle of a box canyon.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Simmons and Grif have each others' personality, which stopped being an issue by the next episode, Tucker's personality hasn't been completely established yet, and Sarge's voice is insanely different from what it would become. The mention to Master Chief also counts, given the show would distance itself as much from the Halo storyline as possible.
- Establishing Character Moment: Church's argument with Tucker over the sniper rife establishes him as the temperamental Only Sane Man.
- Establishing Series Moment: Simmons asking Grif "Why are we here?", only to be bewildered when Grif launches into a philosophical ramble about God.
- Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: "They're just standing there and talking, okay? That's all they're doing. That's all they ever do." A few episodes later, things will really go downhill.
