"Let's hear it for the Universe!"
Kryten is starting to feel like he hasn't accomplished anything in his millennia of existence and makes pathetic attempts to recapture the vitality of his youth. The rest of the crew sets out to find a less advanced robot from his line so Kryten can see how much he's evolved from his original identity.

Krysis provides examples of:

  • Absent Aliens: The Universe outright confirms that life only evolved on Earth (more due to laziness and lack of ambition rather than some carefully crafted effort).
  • The Ace: Butler. He's an even bigger example than Ace Rimmer.
  • All According to Plan: It seems as if Butler actually made a mistake that results in Starbug being disabled, but the crew manage to dock at a station for repairs which just so happens to be the place that lets them talk to the Universe. Later Kryten calls him back to let him know the amazing experience that happened, only to find out Butler's already best friends with the Universe and engineered the situation so they'd arrive at the station and Kryten would get the answers he needed.
Kryten: (On the communicator with Butler) You have Him on speed dial!?
  • Can Not Tell A Lie: If there is something Kryten certainly can do that Butler can't, it's lying. Butler just can't keep quiet about his own accomplishments when prompted and as such, Butler comes across as even more unbearable to Kryten than Ace was to Rimmer.
  • Genius Loci: The Universe turns out to be sentient.
  • Hollywood Mid-Life Crisis: Robots get them too, apparently! Lister also had one, supposedly, but claimed his was over in five minutes.
  • Mid-Life Crisis Car: Kryten actually turns himself into a two-legged one to try to seem fast and cool.
  • Pals with Jesus: Butler reveals he's friendly enough with the Universe to have him on speed dial.
  • Reasoning with God: The Dwarfers encounter and debate the meaning of life with the sapient personification of the Universe.
  • Retcon: Out of Time established that the 3000 series were designed to be more human in appearance, a very unpopular design at the time. Butler is a 3000 series, yet he looks very much like the 4000 series, but with a separate base inspiration rather than the designer's ex.

Kryten's mid-life crisis

It's Kryten's creation day, and he's been thinking about the fact that he's halfway through his life, so he gets a new red paint job and tries to act young again.

How well does it match the trope?
