Go To

Gus gets jinxed by the Ashleys and cannot speak until someone says his name.

Tropes:

  • Argument of Contradictions:
[After bumping into Spinelli on purpose]
Ashley Q.: Like watch where you're going!
Spinelli: But you bumped into me!
    Ashley Q.: Did not!
    Spinelli: Did too!
    Ashley Q.: Did not!
    Spinelli: Did too!
    • Then later:
Ashley Q.: [Gus] is like weird everyday.
      Spinelli: He is not!
      Ashley Q.: Is too!
      Spinelli: Is not!
      Ashley Q.: Is too!
  • Beware the Nice Ones: After saving Gus, the gang then gets revenge on his behalf when the Ashleys talk about how much fun it was. This includes the sweet Mikey and Gretchen.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Right as Gus is about to be taken downtown by the Board of Education officers, TJ grabs the intercom and announces Gus's situation over it, thus freeing him from the jinx and being taken away.
  • Body Language: Gus communicates mainly this way while jinxed through either jumping around and pointing.
  • Buffy Speak: Apparently Gus asking for something he gave away back makes him "a takerbacker".
  • Code of Honour: The Kids Unwritten Code of Honor which must be adhered to all the time.
  • Cute Mute: Gus throughout most of the episode.
  • The Dreaded: The Board of Education, if Miss Finster's and the kids' reactions are anything to go by.
  • Establishing Character Moment: This is the Ashleys' debut episode. The first we see of them is Ashley A spying on the gang and getting a scheming look on her face then the other 3 throwing around ideas for what to do like "spread a rumor about the Swinger Girl".
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: The recess gang laughs at the Ashleys after jinxing them.
  • From Bad to Worse: What happens to Gus starts out as just being unable to talk due to a little jinx, but then it leads to him getting on the bad side of a 6th grader who then takes Gus to King Bob who sentences him to be spun around on the merry go around, AND THEN being brought forward to Principal Prickly who decides to call the Board of Education and have Gus be brought downtown because he thinks Gus is a troublemaker. Luckily things get better once TJ and the gang find out about the jinx and announce what happened over the intercom.
  • It Amused Us: The Ashleys' only reason for messing with Gus is because they had nothing to do and they thought it was funny.
  • Keep Away: The Ashleys take Gus's harmonica and toss it around, this is what leads them to jinx him when he demands they give it back.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The gang jinxes all of the Ashleys in revenge for what they did to Gus. Spinelli fortunately had a five dollar bill to attract their attention.
  • Mocking Sing-Song: The Ashleys taunt Gus like this when they jinx him.
  • Noodle Incident: This is not the first time the agents were called in to deal with a 'another' troublemaker who was just jinxed.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Once the Board of Education agents hear that Gus was Jinxed, they let him go without question.
  • Serious Business: The Kids Unwritten Code of Honor which contains rules about mundane things like trading toys, holding your breath when you pass a cemetery, and not stepping on a crack that must be followed.
    • Also to Prickly, Gus not answering him means that he's a delinquent who needs to be taken downtown by the Board of Education.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: The Board of Education men know what the Code of Honor is, given they let Gus go on hearing that he was jinxed.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After hearing he was jinxed, Gus is treated as a hero by the playground for abiding by it despite everything he was put through.
  • You Monster!: Mikey's reaction to finding out what the Ashleys did.
    Mikey: Cruel fiends!
