Recap / Re Boot S 2 E 2 High Code

Go To

Mainframe is visited by a "Code Master" named Lens, who is looking for another Code Master named Talon...and makes it clear that no one is safe until he finds him. While Bob and Dot try to find a way to stop Lens from wreaking havoc, Enzo learns that Old Man Pearson might have a secret of his own...

This episode has examples of

  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: Lens simply wants Talon and would otherwise leave Mainframe alone, so he warns everyone to comply with his demand or else. Between Bob's interference and the belief the locals are willfully hiding Talon, he goes on a tear.
  • Duel to the Death: Lens challenges Old Man Pearson to a deadly Code Master duel of "High Spar". When Pearson refuses, an enraged Lens decided to simply crush him until the Mainframers stood between them.
  • Enemy Mine: Dot attempts to get Megabyte's help in dealing with a threat to them both, but the virus makes it clear that he's not getting involved at all.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Bob nervously asks if Lens is from a place called the Web. Lens says Mainframe is fortunate that he's from the Net.
    • Old Man Pearson was shaking in fear when he hears Lens' voice demanding for Talon to show himself.
  • Honor Before Reason:
    • Phong won't reveal Talon's cover identity to anyone because he promised to keep it a secret.
    • Old Man Pearson refuses to fight Lens, even breaking his own staff and simply waiting for whatever happens next. The assembled characters in turn stand between him and Lens in order to protect one of their own. Lens is so touched by this display of honor that he agrees to depart and tell his bosses that Talon is indeed no more.
  • Ironic Echo: Bob says he would sacrifice his life for his friends, calling it tradition. Later, when warning that no one leaves the guild, Lens says that's tradition while glancing at Bob.
  • Noodle Incident: Code Masters and viruses have a very mess history.
  • Opt Out: Megabyte wants no part of the current crisis, due to how unpleasant things are between viruses and Code Masters.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: When Old Man Pearson makes it clear that he's no longer a Code Master, Lens tells him that "Once Code Master, always Code Master".
  • The Reveal: The fabled and renegade Talon turns out to be Old Man Pearson.
  • Reverse Psychology: How Enzo convinces the grouchy Old Man Person to help everyone.
  • Secret-Keeper: Phong is the only one in Mainframe who knows Talon's cover identity, and he refuses to reveal it to anyone (even Bob).
  • Taking You with Me: Bob tricks Lens into entering a game, hoping that losing will get the Code Master nullified. This plan goes out the window when he realizes Enzo is in the game as well.
  • That Man Is Dead: When Pearson confronts Lens, he makes it clear that he's abandoned his Code Master life and name. Seeing the Mainframers come to Pearson's defense, a touched Lens agrees to the "truth" that Talon is no more.
  • Worf Effect: To show that Lens means business, the Code Master sabotages Glitch, cutting Bob off from his most useful tool. Megabyte also refuses to get involved with things out of implicit fear of the Code Masters.
