Recap / Re Boot S 1 E 11 Talent Night

Go To

It's Enzo's birthday, and Dot is organizing a birthday party. While Bob keeps the little sprite busy, Dot auditions acts to perform. But then Megabyte gets wind of the festivities and decides it's unfair that he didn't get an invite...

This episode has examples of

  • Art Shift: Harv and Sal are animated in a lower frame rate and rendered flatly compared to everything else in the scene they appear in.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: When Bob reports to Dot that he's having trouble holding Enzo's attention.
Bob: He's getting suspicious, he's getting tired, he's... (sees Enzo heading for town) AAAAH! Headed your way!
  • Bilingual Bonus: Johnny O'Binome's joke, which has people rolling in the aisles, is binary for, "TAKE MY WIFE PLEASE".
  • Birthday Episode: Enzo's first, no less. Most of the episode is spent trying to get acts for his party while Bob has to keep him distracted.
  • Costume Evolution: Enzo’s birthday involves him compiling into a new outfit, with the large “01” on his shirt being replaced with a smaller “10”
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: When Megabyte crashes the party to perform his own guitar solo, Bob takes the stage, turns Glitch into a guitar of his own, and the two have a rockin' guitar duel.
  • Irony: Phong's audition has an introduction seemingly leading up to an epic performance, but he forgets everything after the first word.
Phong: Unforgettable... I have no idea what the next line is.
  • Oh, Crap!: Emma gasps in shock when the live null juggler is about to start his performance. The performance leaves everyone covering their ears in agony from all the null shrieking.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite crashing Enzo's birthday party, Megabyte has a friendly guitar duel with Bob, then hands his guitar to Enzo, giddy about the whole thing before peacefully leaving.
  • RevengeSVP: Subverted. Although Megabyte is vexed at not getting invited to the party, instead of attacking, he decides to perform whether they like it or not.
  • Shout-Out: Oh, yes. The tryouts are loaded with them.
    • One of the acts performs a parody of William Shatner's cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man".
    • The "Live Null Juggling" act is a nod to "live cat juggling" from Steve Martin's The Jerk.
    • The Small Town Binomes are an obvious parody of the Village People, with their song being tonally identical to "Y-M-C-A".
    • A robot from one of YTV's station IDs of the period makes a cameo in the background as one of the performers doing a ballet routine as Enzo arrives to his birthday celebration. The station's logo would be removed for both the ABC airings and home media releases, but still could still be seen in Teletoon Retro's airings.
  • Spy Speak: One of Megabyte's minions greets his boss with "The jam is moldy in the kitchen, and the rolling rabbit gathers no moss."
Megabyte: What are you talking about?
  • Take That!:
    • There are numerous jabs at the Broadcast Standards and Practices, most personified by Emma, the censor who hates almost every act Dot likes.
    • The characters from the Dire Straits Money For Nothing music video make an appearance before they are heckled and Mike the TV drops some sandbags on them.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Half this episode is various acts trying out to perform for Enzo's party.

Emma See

Emma See is a "Prog Sensor" who works with Dot to select the finalists for the talent show. Unfortunately, Emma is very nitpicky and rejects any act that she thinks is too dangerous or too obscene. This is a reference to ABC's Broadcast Standards and Practices, which interfered with the show's production back in the day.

How well does it match the trope?
