Ruby: This is perfect! All we have to do is shadow a Huntsman working in the southeast!
Yang: Yeah! We'll follow them around by day and give them the slip by night!

While the teachers assess the threat they're facing, Team RWBY receive a surprise package from Ruby and Yang's father. Meanwhile, Team CFVY finally return home from their mission and Team RWBY is horrified to learn which teacher will be escorting them for their first field trip.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • As You Know: Ozpin uses this to explain about the war eighty years ago, and to justify the rampant use of Colorful Theme Naming.
  • Bag of Holding: The mail tube manages to hold a dog, a week's worth of food and a can opener.
  • Breather Episode: With the last episode showing Cinder and co. moving further on their plans, this episode merely sets up the beginning of the last arc for Volume 2.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Weiss at first is against a dog staying in their dorm, but one puppy eyed look from an actual puppy quickly causes her to change her mind, mid-sentence.
  • Death Glare: Weiss, Blake, and Yang all give one to Ruby when Ozpin reveals he is on to their schemes.
  • Funny Background Event: While the others read Ruby's and Yang's father's letter detailing his instructions to take care of Zwei, Blake can be seen on top of her bunk, trying to get away from the dog.
  • Little Bit Beastly: We're reminded to Blake's Faunus nature when she expresses horror in the presence of a dog, even jumping up on top of her bunk bed and hiding there like a cat chased up a tree. Her hair even starts to rise like a threatened cat!
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Team RWBY is less than thrilled to find out who their Hunter escort is.
  • Precious Puppy: Zwei debuts in this episode, which causes even Weiss to defrost mid-sentence due his adorableness.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Ozpin continues his path of not just tolerating his students' extra-curricular activities but supporting bringing their activities into line with their coursework and field training. He not only permits Team RWBY to go to the south-east region, he actively bends the rules to get them there. It's partially because he knows that they'll break the rules and sneak there anyway, so at least this way he can give them adult support and resources.

"Hello there, girls! Who's ready to fight for their lives?!"
