"The monsters we fight lack a soul. They are creatures of Grimm, the manifestation of anonymity. They are the darkness, and we are the light."
Pyrrha Nikos

In Part 1, Yang teams up with Blake to fight Ursae while Pyrrha explains the concept of Aura to Jaune.

In Part 2, Professors Ozpin and Goodwitch assess the students while Jaune and Pyrrha's search for the relics doesn't go as well as Yang and Blake's.

Tropes in these episodes include:

  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: Ren stops a giant snake's fangs with his hands and Aura.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: When Jaune tripped in the cave and lost his lit torch, in the dark Pyrrha's green eyes and Jaune's blue eyes are visible for the audience.
  • Foreshadowing: Glynda points out that Jaune is clearly not ready for the level of combat that they're training for despite his transcripts.
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?: When a concerned Pyrrha asks Jaune if he knows what Aura is, he lies and claims that he does, before immediately asking her the exact same question hoping that she provides him the answer.
Pyrrha: Jaune, do you... know what Aura is?
Jaune: [waves the question off, avoiding eye contact] Psch! Of course I do! Do you know what Aura is?
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Weiss and Ruby's arguments basically amounts to them both giving each other one of these.
  • Surveillance as the Plot Demands: Opzin inexplicably has access to live video (with convenient camera angles) of the students. Who are all in the middle of a forest.
  • The Watson: Jaune has no idea what Aura is, so Pyrrha gives him (and, by proxy, the audience) the explanation.
  • Wrestler of Beasts: Ren encounters a giant, two-headed snake Grimm called the King Taijitu. After it disarms him, he fights it with his bare hands, snapping off one of its fangs and jamming it into its eye before obliterating one of its heads with a palm strike.
  • Your Head Asplode: After ramming a snake Grimm's broken fang through its eye, Ren uses his Aura to palm-strike the fang and blow a hole into its head.

"Some girl's in trouble! Blake, did you hear that?"
