Season 2, Episode 2:

Ben & Teller

Written by Aadrita Mukerji

Directed by Kristin Windell

Original air date: 10/11/2023

May 9, 1986

Still reeling from the news that it's been three years from the Project's point of view, Ben leaps into Lorena Sanches, an elderly bank teller in Tucson, Arizona. His mission is to ensure the survival of hostages in a bank robbery.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Project crew in 2026 deals with the reveal that Ben — who had been declared Legally Dead the year before — is still alive. None more so than Addison, who had moved on.

Tropes:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Addison initially balks at returning to the Project after Ben is located, and only wants to enter the Imaging Chamber one final time just to tell Ben that she's moved on. After talking with Tom and Jenn, however, she decides to stick around.
  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: Addison got together with Tom Westfall around the time Ben was declared Legally Dead, reminiscent of way Beth Calavicci got together with Dirk Simon in the original timeline after believing Al died in Vietnam.
  • Bank Robbery: The leap portion of the episode deals with Ben having to save the lives of hostages in a 1986 bank robbery, and facilitate a reconciliation between Rebecca and her bank robber brother Sean.
  • Call-Back: Ian says that Ben tumbling into the 2018 accelerator in "Judgment Day" messed up the Project's ability to track his quantum signature, leading to him being lost to them for three years.
  • Continuity Nod: Ben tells the bank robbers that it's not his first bank robbery, referencing how he leapt into a bank robber way back in the first episode.
  • Gender Bender: Ben leaps into Lorena Chaves, an elderly grandmother.
  • Legally Dead: After failing to locate Ben for two years, the Pentagon had him declared dead, and there was a funeral.
  • Internal Homage: To "Promised Land" from the original series, which was also about a bank robbery that had a sibling element.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Justified with Addison's new love interest Tom Westfall, whom everyone at the Project in 2026 welcomes with hugs and handshakes, as he'd gotten close with them sometime after contact with Ben was lost in 2023.
  • Taking the Heat: Sean shoots Ganz to protect Rebecca and Ben/Lorena. Rebecca convinces Sean to give her his gun so she can say she shot Ganz in self-defense.
