Recap / Princess Tutu "Heart Shard"

Go To

Once upon a time there was a man who died.
The last story the man was writing was about a brave and handsome prince who vanquishes a crafty raven.
When the man died, the raven and the prince escaped from within the story.
The prince took out his own heart to seal away the raven.
But this power, which had been granted solely to him, was nevertheless forbidden.
Thus sealed, the raven troubled them no more.
But the prince's heart was shattered, and the shards scattered all over town.
Ever since then, stories and reality have intermingled in the town, making it a world where the fantastical was no longer fantastical...

  • Be Yourself: Princess Tutu convinces Anteaterina that instead of forcing herself to imitate Rue, she should try to dance the way she wants to. Sure enough, Anteaterina finds she's much happier for it.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Anteaterina asks Rue how she be as good a dancer as the former, the latter responds "You can't." Ouch. However, at the end of the episode we see that Rue was not trying to be cruel, as she's seen smiling when Anteaterina makes her announcement to the class that she intends to find her own way of dancing.
  • Freudian Excuse: Anteaterina carries the heart shard of frustration because a while ago, she had marveled Rue's dancing technique and hoped to be as good as her. But when Rue coldly shot her down by saying she would never meet her level, Anteaterina was despondent. Desperate, she drove herself to imitate Rue's dancing style, even though the comparison and competition only make her more and more bitter.
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Fueled by her wish to dominate Rue as the best dancer, Anteaterina challenges her to a dance battle in the middle of class, while taking Mytho as her partner. Rue accepts the challenge, asking Duck to be her partner instead.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: The ending. While Mr. Cat commends Duck's dance performance, he adds that it was good only because Rue was helping her. Therefore he kicks Duck to the probationary class.
