Recap / Primeval S 3 E 1

Go To

An anomaly opens in the British Museum, disgorging a prehistoric crocodile that goes on the rampage in Central London.

  • A God Am I: A non-sentient variation: Sarah speculates that the Pristichampsus may have been mistaken by the ancient Egyptians for Ammut or Sobek.
  • Absurd Phobia: Apparently Connor hates museums after he got locked in one after hours as a kid trying to find out if the exhibits came to life when everyone was gone.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Zig-zagged; Sarah Page is clearly happier in the lab, but she's not adverse to getting her hands dirty.
  • All Myths Are True: Cutter concludes that all mythical creatures throughout history must have been inspired by encounters between people in the ancient world and creatures that emerged from anomalies. Sarah Page is brought onto the team to research these myths to pinpoint where anomalies will open.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Lester sums up the team this way while explaining Captain Becker's new duties to him.
Lester: You will be dealing with a highly strung and temperamental team of rank amateurs who just happen to be brilliant at what they do.
  • The Cameo: A pack of future predators briefly appear attacking some mooks of Johnson's.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The Sun Cage, an Egyptian artefact made of magnetite that clues the team into the fact certain magnetic fields can close anomalies.
    • The mysterious artefact that Christine Johnson wanted and has fallen into Helen Cutter's hands.
  • Curse of the Pharaoh: Sarah initially thinks the Pristichampsus is the ancient Egyptian demoness Ammut come to punish her for messing with the Sun Cage until Connor convinces her otherwise. After he inadvertently damages part of the Sun Cage, Sarah has a bit of fun at Connor's expense by telling him there's a curse on the artefact, later confessing to Abby she made it up to mess with his head.
  • Evil Plan: Helen Cutter clearly has one, as the episode ends with her and her clone soldiers setting up a base where she can study the artefact she swiped out of Christine Johnson's hands.
  • First Appearance: For Captain Becker, Sarah Page and Christine Johnson.
  • Interservice Rivalry: There's no love lost between Lester and Christine Johnson, the ARC's new military liaison.
  • It's All My Fault: Zig-zagged; Cutter doesn't blame himself for Stephen's death, but still feels guilty that he didn't make the sacrifice.
  • It Can Think: Implied: the Pristichampsus clearly recognises people bowing to it as a sign of non-aggression. Sarah and Cutter hypothesize that this is due to the ancient Egyptians worshiping the species as gods.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Sarah convinces everyone in the museum to bow to the Pristichampsus; since it's used to being treated like a god by the Egyptians, doing so again might convince it they mean no harm.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: The Sun Cage gets shipped off to an out of the way museum in Pyongyang at the episode's end.
