When Jack and Colette both find themselves with time to spend on break in the week leading up to the kelenken/purussaurus mission, they choose to go on a perfectly harmless friendly outing together...that's totally not a date.
- Killer Rabbit: As small and harmless looking as they may be, didelphodon are described in the narrative as actually being the unspoken apex predator of their specific environmental niche of the Hell Creek ecosystem, with a bite that can easily make short work of anything edible they consider to be on their menu.
- Malicious Monitor Lizard: Played with, but ultimately averted, in regards to the palaeosaniwa. While Geronimo at least gives off a very audible hissing at the sight of Jack and Colette coming to a stop near the boundary of his kind's paddock, the narrative makes it clear that this hissing is more in hungry anticipation of what he (ultimately quite correctly) assumes to be an incoming snack than in malice or territorial rage, and neither he nor any of the other palaeosaniwa ultimately cause any trouble.
- Shipper on Deck: Carmen, Maria, and Aaron all teasingly imply themselves to be this for Jack and Colette over the course of the latter's being introduced to them properly by the former; much to the duo's embarrassment. Duke and Cassie the dromaeosaurus also surreptitiously show hints of being this via an amused look they give to each other while watching the duo.
- Ship Tease: Jack and Colette receive a heavy dosage of this all throughout the chapter.
- Shout-Out: Turns out, over the course of the staff Halloween party mentioned in No Small Parts, Only Small Animals, Yolanda dressed up as Rapunzel while Jack and Colette dressed up as Captain America and Black Widow (respectively).
- Snakes Are Sinister: Averted as usual with Kaa.
