Recap / Power Rangers Zeo S1E50 Good As Gold

Go To

The Gold Ranger Powers are beginning to reject Jason's body, and unless the Rangers can transfer them back to Trey of Triforia, it could be the end of both. However, The Machine Empire is determined to ger the powers for themselves. Meanwhile, Bulk and Skull get an opportunity of a lifetime, and Rita and Zedd begin their plans to overthrow the empire.

Tropes

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: In addition to Mondo and his Cogs, the Rangers themselves grow in size instead of using their zords.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: While they may have defeated Mondo it's not the Rangers themselves who end the threat of the Machine Empire but rather Zedd who plants a bomb in a gift for Sprocket that takes the Royal House of Gadgetry out in one fell swoop.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Stone when Bulk and Skull say they're quitting the detective agency.
  • Big "YES!": Zedd when Mondo gets in a good hit on Tommy. Later, Jason when Tommy and Trey take down Mondo.
  • Continuity Nod: Rita comments about Jason's tenure as the Red Mighty Morphin' Ranger.
"Personally, I always thought you looked better in red."
  • Demoted to Extra: Rocky doesn’t appear outside his suit likely due to Steve Cardenas' wanting to leave the series and talking it over with Saban.
  • Disguised in Drag: Bulk and Skull go to their meeting in the park dressed as old ladies. Skull has no idea why they're doing this; Bulk says he doesn't really, either, but adds that disguises are just part of being detectives. They're still dressed when telling Stone about their intentions to leave.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After being driven away by the Machine Empire at the start of the season, Zedd and Rita get their revenge by blowing up Mondo and his House of Gadgetry.
  • Evil vs. Evil: Both factions want to claim the Gold Ranger powers and end up directing their mooks against each other. It proves to be an embarrassing stalemate, as the Tengas get their feathers plucked and the Cogs get dismantled. However, Zedd works out a plan that allows him and Rita to take out the Machine Empire's leadership in one swoop.
  • Eviler than Thou: "We're back!"
  • From Bad to Worse: Jason is on the run from Cogs, with his powers fluctuating and his communicator not working at all. Then he finds Rita and Zedd in his path.
  • Giant Mooks: Mondo has a group of Cogs grow with him to fight the Rangers.
  • Incoming Ham: Pursued by Cogs, Jason rounds a corner and sees Zedd and Rita already standing in his way.
    Zedd: SURPRISE!
  • Insult Backfire:
Stone: Who in their right mind would offer a job to you guys?!
    Skull: You mean besides you?
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Rita tells Mondo that she and Zedd no longer fear him.
  • Off with His Head!: Rita and Zedd's bomb blows Mondo's head clean off (with his decapitated head being in full view when last seen).
  • Orcus on His Throne: Subverted again as Mondo again tries to fight the Rangers personally, this time with a group of Cogs. The Rangers have no more trouble beating him than they did the last time, this time growing instead of using their zords.
  • Pass the Popcorn: As the Rangers fight Mondo and Cogs, Zedd and his crew simply kick back on the sidelines with drinks to enjoy the show.
  • Plot Hole: If Mondo had the ability to make things giant all along as he does here, then why did he bother upgrading Orbus and Klank to do that job?
  • Scylla and Charybdis: Zedd lampshades how Jason is caught between a rock (him and Rita) and a hard place (the approaching Cogs). He suggests that has to be quite a tricky situation for Jason, especially with his powers fluctuating.
  • Somebody Set Us Up The Bomb: Rita and Zedd give Mondo and his family a little gift...which turns out to be a bomb that obliterates them all.
Zedd: I hope Sprocket gets a real bang out of his present!
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Stone chides Bulk and Skull for bailing on his agency, but he quickly gains a look of forlorn once they leave.
  • Swapped Roles: At the beginning of the season Zedd and Rita were forced to flee their palace after King Mondo arrived leaving the two humiliated. At the end of the season, Zedd has taken the House of Gadgetry out in one fell swoop and reclaims his throne while Mondo is reduced to a head ineffectually sputtering that he will be back.
  • Villain Ball: The villains get so focused on outdoing each other that Jason is able to slip away.
  • We Will Meet Again: After he and his House of Gadgetry are reduced to scrap metal, King Mondo (or at least his head) vows that the Machine Empire will return.
  • Xanatos Gambit: With the Rangers and Mondo going at it, Zedd prefers to hang back, as he benefits regardless of who actually wins.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: When Mondo says they've reached a stalemate and suggests the others just leave, Zedd protests but then changes his mind. As he later tells Rita, he's come up with a plan spur of the moment.
