Go To

With Jason having taken up the mantle of the Gold Ranger, Rocky becomes worried that his return will replace him. Meanwhile, Mondo, tired of his monsters' failures to defeat the Rangers, decides to take matters into his own hands...

Tropes

  • Big "YES!": The other villains are excited by Mondo's destruction.
Rita: With Mondo gone, the world is ours!
    Lord Zedd: YES!
  • The Bus Came Back: The last couple of episodes demonstrated that Rita and Zedd were returning, but the episode's final scene shows that Finster is also with them. No sign of Squatt and Baboo, though.
  • Demoted to Extra: Rocky is convinced that the returning Jason is out to replace him.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: Mondo, of course, fighting against the Rangers. Much like the MOTW, Mondo finds out why this is a bad idea. Unlike the MOTW, Mondo doesn't seem to be Made of Explodium.
  • Dramatic Irony: Rocky worries about being replaced by the guy he replaced.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Machina comments that it's a shame that all the monsters that the Rangers destroyed didn't have Mondo's keen intelligence, it inspires Mondo.
  • Heroic BSoD: Rocky goes through one when he thinks he's being replaced by Jason. He gets better after they defeat King Mondo and Jason reassures Rocky that he's not trying to take his place.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: While fighting the Super Zeo Megazord, Mondo declared "You fools will never defeat the Damocles Sword!". Five seconds later, the Super Zeo Megazord chops the sword in half with its sabers.
  • It's All My Fault: Rocky blames himself for Mondo endangering the city.
  • Make My Monster Grow: Using the power of the Damocles Sword, Mondo was able to grow on his own.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Rocky opts to prove himself by taking on Mondo one-on-one rather than alert the other Rangers to what he's found. When Rocky is forced to retreat from this fight, Mondo turns his attention to the city.
  • Noodle Incident: The last time Mondo used the Damocles Sword, over a thousand years ago. Whatever it was, it resulted in his destruction.
  • Not Quite Dead: Mondo gets blown up, but Machina insists that he can be rebuilt.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Said word-for-word by Machina when Mondo was destroyed.
  • One-Winged Angel: It’s subtle, but Mondo sports a more elaborate gear on his back after growing with the power of the Damocles Sword.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Subverted when Mondo fights the Rangers himself. Thanks to their new Super Zeo Megazord, they have no more trouble defeating him than they do the average monster.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to "Custer's Last Stand".
  • Sword of Damocles: The Damocles Sword.
  • Unexpected Inheritance: For Ernie in the episode's B plot: his Uncle Randolph Burble, the founder of the Burble Baby Food Company (like the Pan Global Games from the previous season, the Burble Baby Food Company is likely an in-universe stand-in for the Gerber Baby Food Company), has passed away and are trying to find their first Burble Baby Food Baby to give him his inheritance. Lt. Stone, Bulk, and Skull get on the case. It is eventually revealed that they got the age of the baby wrong and that the original baby was Ernie. His inheritance? A lifetime supply of their baby food, which Ernie promptly suggests turning into smoothies.
