Recap / Power Rangers In Space S1E7 A Ranger Among Thieves

Go To

With the earth rangers busy with their math midterms, Andros is left to his own devices and befriends a trio of shady-looking young people at the Surf Spot. It turns out they're carjackers, to Andros' ignorance, and he joins them before discovering their true nature. Things get dicey when Ecliptor attacks Angel Grove with an electric-based monster, Voltage Hog, and the thieves get caught in the crossfire.

Tropes

  • Bad Guys Play Pool: The car thieves are introduced playing at the Surf Spot's pool table, though Suzie and David are a subversion. Averted completely with Andros.
  • Cool Old Lady: Adele, instead of getting angry at the remorseful car thieves or pressing charges, admonishes them by praising their willingness to come forward and gives them jobs as delivery people for the Surf Spot.
  • Dark Is Evil: Chuck wears all black and is the only one of the thieves who is presented as irredeemable. He gets arrested at the end.
  • Dirty Coward: When confronted by the monster, Chuck's first thought is to run and hide.
    • Foil: Suzi and David choose to help Andros fight it instead.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Andros doesn’t see anything off with Chuck and his cohorts trying to break into a car. Justified as he's fairly new to Earth and only had his virtuous teammates to draw references from, so he had no reason to suspect them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Cuts both ways. Chuck was caught by the police and arrested after he abandoned Andros and his accomplices to the monster. David and Suzie, by contrast, backtrack and help Andros get away so he can at least morph and fight back. Later they own up to their foolishness and return Adele's keys to her van, impressing her so that she gives them jobs as her delivery service.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Villainous version; Ecliptor's left shoulder is now branched out and jagged plus he no longer has a cape. His power has also gone up. Bizarrely, Andros makes no mention of any of this.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Andros says he can’t stand thievery after he stops a purse snatcher from robbing an old woman. This makes David and Suzie question their actions, but doesn’t do jack shit for Chuck.
  • Sequel Hook: Astronema sets her eyes on Professor Phenomenus' new fuel and is giddy to find out it goes "kaboom", leading into the next episode.
  • Sticky Fingers: Chuck grabs money out of an older woman's purse so he can make bets with his cohorts during their pool game. Doubles as his Establishing Character Moment.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Played surprisingly straight by Chuck, who not only displays nothing redeemable but is also caught in the middle of hotwiring another car and arrested. Subverted by David and Suzie who each have a conscious and atone for their crimes by returning Adele's keys and offering to make it up to her.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Chuck is the truly bad seed of the thieves and is arrested for his crimes in the end.
