Dr. Tommy Oliver returns as a high school teacher and has to watch a group of teenager in detention. Hoping to get out of it, the three teens come across some gems. Unbeknownst to everyone, an old enemy of Tommy's, is after them.

- Action Prologue: The series kicks off with Tommy desperately fleeing Mesogog's forces on an exploding island, under circumstances that aren't clarified until the next episode.

- Fantasy Helmet Enforcement: Tommy makes a point of fastening his seat belt before driving off even though the freaking Tyrannosaur chasing him seemed to be the greater safety hazard. Lampshaded by the man himself: "Yeah, lock the door, Tommy. Real good." In a jeep with the top down no less! Red Racer would be proud.
- Homage: The introductory scene is essentially a Power Rangers version of Indiana Jones.
- It's Probably Nothing: Ethan shoots this down. "That ain't the wind. As much as we'd like it to be... it ain't."
- Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Cassidy herself notes this early on, wondering why the jock, the nerd and the rocker are all hanging out together.Cassidy: Why would Conner McKnight—-King of all Jocks—-be hanging out with Ethan James? King of all Geeks? Not to mention the Avril wannabe. I mean, in the three years we've been at Reefside, have you ever seen them look at each other? Because I haven't.

- They Would Cut You Up: Before the kids learn just who Tommy is, this is the reason Ethan gives to Kira for keeping the gems a secret. Guys with super-powers often end up in labs with wires sticking out of their heads. Conner adds that even he knows that one.
