Recap / Power Rangers Dino Fury Episode Fourteen Old Foes

Go To

Ollie claims to not be afraid of anything, but the appearance of an all-too-familiar enemy may prove otherwise...

Tropes:

  • Big "YES!": Lord Zedd right before he starts manhandling a stunned Void Knight.
  • Blood Knight: Lord Zedd relishes his fights and says he so missed them. People teleporting away rather than even try fighting greatly irritates him.
  • The Bus Came Back: Lord Zedd (prior to his Heel–Face Turn) is restored to life by the sorcerer Reaghoul.
  • Call-Back:
    • Lord Zedd is initially under Reaghoul's control via a Compliance Collar.
    • Also, in Making Bad, the possibility of bringing back Lord Zedd was mentioned before, but the villains ultimately decided it to be a bad idea. They were right.
    • A couple of things from Unexpected Guest are brought back. The No Howl Drop and the Legendary Ranger Database.
  • Clip Show: Played with. It's not a traditional clip show as most of the footage used is Lord Zedd's legacy through the Legendary Ranger Database. The only clip used from Dino Fury is Ollie remembering how Mic used the No Howl Drop on Wolfgang.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Using the Legendary Ranger Database, Ollie and Solon look at Lord Zedd's legacy from the Mighty Morphin era along with Serpentera and his infamous Dark Rangers. Also, the Z Wave from In Space is shown.
    • Upon being free from the Compliance Collar, Lord Zedd makes a similar comment to the one Rita made when the astronauts freed her except he says "all this time" instead of "ten thousand years".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Zedd gets two, just to show this isn't the Henpecked Husband he became:
    • His Establishing Character Moment is hoisting Void Knight over his head, kicking Slyther to the side, then tossing Void Knight to the ground.
    • When he's free of the Compliance Collar and Mucus and Reaghoul escape, Zedd takes his anger out on the remaining Sporix, forcing the Rangers to intervene.
  • Dirty Coward: Zedd believes Ollie is this when Solon teleports him away.
  • Dramatic Unmask: The cloaked figure revealed to be one of the Power Rangers' most infamous enemies.
  • The Dreaded: All these years later, Lord Zedd is still remembered as this. The villains are openly scared of just the sight of him and question how Reaghoul maintains control over him. Also, Solon plays a montage of some of Zedd's greatest hits (using the Rock of Time, taking Serpentera into battle, and stealing Tommy's Green Ranger powers to create the Dark Rangers) to demonstrate his fearsome reputation. When Ollie asks how the previous Rangers defeated Zedd, Solon says they didn't and that it took a sacrifice that can't be replicated to end his threat to the universe.
  • Enemy Mine: Zayto reluctantly tells the other Rangers to save the Sporix from Zedd, mostly because they have no idea what he could do with them.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Lampshaded when Slyther describes Reaghoul controlling Lord Zedd as "toying".
  • Fake Shemp: As with “Making Bad” from Beast Morphers, all the monster and human characters from Saban era clips are dubbed over with New Zealand actors. This was because the audio for older episodes was mixed into a single stereo master with the music and dialogue on one track, meaning the musicnote  couldn’t be removed without damaging the voices (and vice versa), forcing a redub altogether.
  • Forgot Flanders Could Do That: Lord Zedd's fighting ability was only seen once in the original series, where he effortlessly pummeled Tommy. Here, he gets to show it off in full, proving to be The Juggernaut, even without his staff and thus not at his full strength.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: Amelia is a vampire as she's into the supernatural, Ollie is an astronaut to fit with his logical mind, Javi is a zombie warden most likely making fun of his father, Izzy is a leprechaun and Zayto is a knight since it reflects his chivalrous nature and his past as a Knight of Rafkon.
  • Halloween Episode: The episode takes place on Halloween
  • The Heartless: Lord Zedd is described as not being the purified Zedd returned to evil, but Lord Zedd's evil revived with absolutely none of his good.
  • It Only Works Once: Solon points out they just can't make a second Z-Wave (Zordon) since its components were unique.
  • The Juggernaut: Zedd proves completely unstoppable, curbstomping everyone foolish enough to fight him. Notably, the Rangers don't even beat him, they just annoy him enough that he decides to go get his staff back and come back to burn Earth to a cinder.
  • Never Say "Die": After Lord Zedd reveals himself, Void Knight says he thought Zedd was "no more". As Zedd is about to destroy Void Knight, he says Void Knight will be "no more".
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Void Knight and his lieutenants are shocked to realize that the cloaked person trying to steal their Sporix is none other than Lord Zedd.
    • Reaghoul's reaction when Zedd's Compliance Collar is disabled.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Wolfgang has this reaction when he's fed a No Howl Drop again.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Twice:
    • When Zedd is freed from the Compliance Collar and prepares to go on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, Mucus and Reaghoul teleport away in fear, much to Zedd's frustration.
    • After getting annoyed enough by the Rangers, Lord Zedd departs to unknown places, but promises he will be back once he finds his staff.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence:
    • A cocky Ollie thought he had a chance to face Lord Zedd one on one. The same being that wiped the floor of Tommy back in Mighty Morphin with ease. Fortunately, Solon manages to teleport Ollie out of there and bluntly tells him he cannot face Lord Zedd alone. Solon flat out says even using the Zords wouldn't be enough to beat him.
    • The two Sporix Beasts that Reaghoul left to hold off Zedd charge him, confident they can handle him. They can't. At all.
  • This Cannot Be!: Void Knight over Lord Zedd being alive.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Ollie hurls his sword at Zedd. It misses, but flies back like a boomerang to destroy the Compliance Collar.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: After Zedd leaves, the two Sporix he was fighting immediately turn against the Rangers. Amelia lampshades it.
  • Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: After manhandling Void Knight, Zedd picks up his sword and tries to kill him with it. Fortunately, Reaghoul tells him to stand down.
  • We Will Meet Again: Before he leaves, Zedd promises that he will return to fight the Rangers again once he finds his staff, and burn the Earth to a cinder while he's at it.
  • Wham Episode: Lord Zedd is reanimated and he escapes meaning that he'll be back in the future.
  • Wham Shot: The opening of the episode has Void Knight encountering Lord Zedd himself.
  • Who Dares?: Void Knight asks this of the cloaked individual that broke into his headquarters and is trying to steal from him. He gets more than he bargained for when seeing it's Lord Zedd.
  • The Worf Effect: Zedd does this throughout the episode, trouncing Void Knight and his minions like they are nothing, effortlessly manhandling two Sporix at once, and later going toe-to-toe with the Rangers with ease, all to establish that the Emperor of Evil is back.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Zedd explains Reaghoul couldn't find his staff, meaning he's not yet at full power. He still manages to steamroll everyone with little effort.
  • You Have Failed Me: Said by Void Knight to Reaghoul at the end of the episode, but figures Reaghoul's power might be useful, so instead of destroying him, he places him in a cell.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Zedd grumbles this when Mucus and Reaghoul escape, complaining about why people just keep teleporting away.
