Recap / Power Rangers Dino Supercharge S2E5 Roar of the Red Ranger

Go To

When one of Singe's plans makes Tyler go feral, a new ally comes to the rescue.

Singe has a new plan, one that will be able to take the rangers out without resorting to fighting a losing battle: plant a virus onto their computer so their Dino Chargers won't work. When Fury points out he won't be able to get anywhere near the rangers, Singe counters that he won't be, but one of his allies will - Ninja. Ninja possesses incredible speed, and will be able to get close to the rangers to download the virus, without being caught.

Tyler is showing the others where he and his dad would camp out in the woods. In a clearing, underneath a pile of rocks is a treasure chest filled with their memories. Tyler returns every year to add a new memory to the collection, this years being a Dino Byte cap. When they move onto target practice, Tyler is unfocused, not getting as high a score as normal. When Shelby presses, she accidentally suggests that his dad may not have survived the cave in, and that Tyler should stop looking and focus on the task at hand. Tyler in turn runs out into the woods. Meanwhile, Ninja has snuck into the training area and planted the virus onto Kendall's laptop. He attacks Tyler in the forest as the latter runs away. Without his Energem (Kendall took it for analysis) Tyler is a sitting duck, until he is rescued - by the Aqua Ranger.

Tyler relates what happened to the others, saying that the Aqua Ranger has shown up. Keeper implores the rangers to convince Aqua to join them in the fight against Heckyl. Kendall also mentions that the newest charger, Supercharge Mode, is ready for testing. As the upload into the empty charger begins, nobody notices the virus alert that pops up. The rangers morph to test the new charger, with Koda's Stego Shield being the target. When Tyler activates it, it overloads, causing his mind to act like a Tyrannosaurus. He adopts a T.rex stance and attacks anyone and everyone, his helmet acting like a real dinosaur's mouth. As he flees, the rangers regroup to investigate.

Singe notes that now that Tyler has gone feral, it will be an easy feat to snatch his Energerm, he just needs an expert tracker to locate him, which is where Hunter comes in. Snide is unimpressed, warning Singe that if he doesn't get the Energem, he will be in deep trouble. The rangers discover the virus, and after purging the virus from the system, create a clean Supercharge Charger as well as a Hypnosis Charger to quell Tyler's feral instincts. Shelby realizes that if there is even a shred of Tyler left, he will go back for his treasure. As they reach the clearing, they discover Tyler has come and gone, and the monsters ambush them. With Chase heading out to find Tyler, the others fight the two monsters. Chase locates Tyler, and blasts him with the Hypnosis Charger, but it does nothing but make him angrier. Chase is defenseless until the Aqua Ranger shows up again to calm Tyler, demorphing to reveal his identity: James Navarro - Tyler's dad.

As the seven rangers line up, Hunter flees, leaving Ninja to face the rangers alone. Chase hands Tyler the new Supercharge morpher, which when combined with the Rex Zord will enable the mode. In Supercharge mode, Tyler wipes the floor with Ninja, and is able to send him packing with a twin morpher blast. Enraged, Heckyl fires the Magnabeam, forcing the rangers to use the Plesio Pacha-Rex Megazord to defeat him. While Heckyl wants to destroy Hunter for his cowardice and for finding another Ranger to add to their ever expanding ranks, Singe has a new plan; one which requires using Hunter as bait.

Later, Tyler confides in Shelby that he was wrong to say she didn't know him, and she apologizes for giving up hope. James notes that he found the Aqua Energem a decade ago, and although injured from the cave in, hid from the world with Rusty's help. As the others head back to base, father and son share a long overdue game of catch.

Tropes:

  • Badass Adorable: The shrunken Tyranno Zord is as adorable as it is capable of smashing Vivix and the Monster of the Week.
  • Secret-Keeper: Rusty kept the fact James was a Ranger to himself for 10 years.
  • Sixth Ranger: The newest ranger to join the ranks is none other than James Navarro - Tyler's father.
  • Super Mode: The Red Ranger's Battlizer makes a return here, last seen (properly, Shogun Mode doesn't count) in Operation Overdrive. This one is called Supercharge Mode, and is based off of Carnival Mode from the sentai.
  • Wham Episode: While testing out a battleizer mode for Tyler, a monster ninja sneaks a virus into the charger, turning Tyler feral. The team finds him, but he's too strong. Suddenly, the Aqua ranger finally makes his debut and reveals himself to be... Tyler's long lost dad.
  • Wham Line: The Aqua Ranger finally reveals his identity with the following bombshell.
Aqua Ranger: It's me. I'm your dad.
