Recap / Portal 2 The Escape

Go To

Free from GLaDOS's gaze, Chell and Wheatley head to the enrichment center's turret production line. On the way, they discover a number of potato battery experiments created during a past Bring Your Daughter to Work Day; while most of the potatoes used have long since rotted, one that is labeled "Chell" has become the root of a mass of plants reaching up through the facility, as if alluding to the Determinator nature of the game's protagonist.

After reconfiguring the turret production line to produce only defective, non-functioning turrets, Chell and Wheatley travel on to the enrichment center's Neurotoxin Production Facility, which Chell shuts down using portals and a convenient nearby laser. Her doing so causes a vacuum tube to break and suck away her and Wheatley; as they travel through the tubes, Wheatley comments on the scale of the enrichment center - adding that there are additional sealed levels deep below - before the pair are separated once again.

Continuing on alone, Chell is caught in a trap by GLaDOS and bought before the AI, who attempts to kill her with turrets and neurotoxin. Thanks to the earlier sabotage however, both measures fail to work, and Chell manages to escape and reunite with Wheatley. By now GLaDOS has become corrupted enough for the enrichment center to call for a core transfer; Chell attempts to swap GLaDOS for Wheatley, but GLaDOS refuses to be transferred out; fortunately, Chell is able to press a nearby "Stalemate Resolution Button" in order to force the transfer, shutting down GLaDOS (again) while putting Wheatley in control of the entire enrichment center.

After briefly relishing in his newfound capabilities, Wheatley summons an elevator to transport Chell out. As she's been taken up though, the power goes to Wheatley's head and decides to stay in the enrichment center, citing his supposed accomplishment in taking control of the place. GLaDOS awakens and retorts that Chell did all the work; feeling slighted by this, Wheatley has GLaDOS turned into a potato battery, and then accuses Chell of selfishly using him for her own ends. "PotatOS" recognises Wheatley as an Intelligence Dampening Sphere, a personality core that had once been used to try and suppress her homicidal urges by supplying her with countless bad ideas. She derides him as a moron designed to turn her into an idiot; enraged by the insult, Wheatley uses a robot arm to throw her into the elevator with Chell, and then batters the elevator until it falls apart, sending both Chell and GLaDOS plummeting down into the shaft...
