Recap / Pokemon S 9 E 9 Reversing The Charges

Go To

With his third Frontier Badge in hand, Ash and Pikachu head off towards their next competition, only for a strong electrical jolt to appear underneath a lightning storm. The heroes find themselves dealing with a particularly feisty Elekid, who's not only usually strong, but who's antics cause May's egg to get separated! As they desperately try to track it down and figure out why Elekid is suddenly so aggressive, Team Rocket finds themselves with the missing egg, but short one Mime Junior!

  • An Aesop: Whenever you see a thunderstorm, get inside somewhere it’s safe.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Phanpy gets this moment when it steps in between Pikachu and Elekid, no selling Elekid's electricity thanks to it being a ground type. Then when it evolves into Donphan, it really gets the chance to show its new power off.
  • Call-Back: When Brock gets a "Eureka!" Moment about Elekid's condition, he asks Ash if he remembers when Pikachu became overcharged on electricity back in the Hoenn arc premier. Ash recalls that moment quite well, pointing out that Pikachu acted in the same way until the electricity from his system was discharged.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Elekid gets charged up on electricity, there isn't a single Pokemon safe from its wrath, as nearly everyone in its path falls without blinking.
  • Enemy Mine: Not that it was hard for it to do, but Mime Junior willingly teams up with the twerps to get back to its master.
  • Horrifying the Horror: As mentioned under O.O.C. Is Serious Business, the normally short-tempered Jessie (whom, keep in mind, James and Meowth are terrified of when she gets mad) actually gets scared when James gets mad at her suggestion that Mime Junior won't find its way back.
  • Missing Child: May and James desperately search for their missing egg and Mime Junior respectively, out of fear that an unusually aggressive Elekid might hurt them.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Pikachu tries a powerful Volt Tackle against Elekid. It starts off strong—then it gives out before he can finish it, indicating he still hasn't mastered the move.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: James is so worried about Mime Junior's safety that the normally timid and cowardly member of Team Rocket gets seriously pissed when Jessie and Meowth suggest he's not coming back. Even Jessie is frightened.
  • Pet the Dog: Team Rocket and the heroes take a timeout during their battle so May and James can swap back her egg for his Mime Junior. Neither one of them backstab each other in the process.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Phanpy isn't strong enough to deal with Team Rocket's Golem mecha. Then it evolves into Donphan, and it immediately turns the tide thanks to learning a powerful hyper beam.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Justified. Elekid becomes much more usually aggressive than is normal for its species because it's overcharged on electricity from a lightning storm. Once it's out of its system, it goes back to normal and acts much nicer.
