US Airdate: October 9, 2004
The twerps encounter the Winstrate family, a family of Pokémon trainers that live in the desert of Route 111. After a battle with the family, their estranged son, Vito, arrives with Team Rocket.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Age Lift: The Vivi of the RSE games and remakes use the Lass sprite. Vivi of the anime is a preteen, around the same age as Max.
- Berserk Button: Camerupt doesn't take too kindly to being whacked on the face.
- Jerkass: Corphish disobeys Max's instructions for how to battle Marill, choosing to simply to curb-stomp it, and then acts very haughty about his win, completely disregarding how he ruined Max's chances with Vivi.
- Leeroy Jenkins: When Max tries to simply play defense against Vivi, Corphish decides instead to curb-stomp Marill with one barrage.
- Mythology Gag: In the RSE games, the Player Character battles the Winstrate family one at a time, and Vivi gets upset when she is beaten.
- Oh, Crap!: The gang reacts this way at the end of the episode after Grandma Winstrate orders Camerupt to use eruption as a way of saying good-bye.Ash and the Gang: (Screams). Not that!
- Puppy Love: Vivi and Max.
- Unwitting Pawn: Team Rocket uses Vito to get at his family.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Corphish ruined Max and Vivi's crush by totally destroying Vivi's Marill.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After narrowly avoiding Camurupt's flames, Team Rocket quickly make a retreat, ignoring Vito's protests.Vito: Wait! You were gonna talk to my grandma for me!
James: Well, let's just say we burned out on that idea!
