Tropes

  • Bittersweet Ending: May's first contest ends in a humiliating defeat but she pulls together and strives to win the next contest.
  • Break the Cutie: The Pokémon battle part of the episode was not kind to May.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: May's training with Beautifly focused entirely on the Appeal part of the contest, making her unprepared for the Battle part, and, while May and Beautifly was able to make it past the first round, they lost horribly in their first battle.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In the battling part of the Pokémon contest, Drew's Roselia soundly defeats May's Beautifly. May did not take it well.
    • Likewise, Drew's Roselia suffers a harsh defeat against Robert's Milotic, with the latter completely unharmed while the former was struggling hard. At least he fared better than May.
  • Heroic BSoD: After her defeat, May was crying in the locker room, blaming herself when her Beautifly worked so hard and she couldn't do anything.
