Tropes

  • Attack Reflector: How Snorlax goes down: he uses Hyper Beam against Harrison's Houndoom who uses Counter, bouncing Hyper Beam back at Snorlax at double the power.
  • Back for the Dead: Noctowl doesn't do anything before being beaten by Steelix.
  • Beam-O-War: The episode ends with Charizard's and Blaziken's Flamethrowers colliding in mid-air, showing that they are even match for each other.
  • Continuity Snarl: Ash and his friends act as if they have no clue what Kecleon is to the point where Ash brings out his Pokédex to check the Color Change Pokémon despite the fact that they interacted with two in The Kecleon Caper!
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Ash's Totodile, Snorlax and Bayleef beat Sneasel, Hypno, Steelix and Houndoom easily.
    • Harrison's Sneasel, Steelix, Houndoom and Blaziken beat Pikachu, Noctowl, Snorlax and Bayleef easily.
  • Don't Wake the Sleeper: Hypno's Dream Eater ends up waking up Snorlax, which ends up being a big mistake, as he wakes up in a rage and destroys Hypno with Hyper Beam.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Houndoom uses Counter to bounce Hyper Beam back at Snorlax, as at the time Hyper Beam was a physical move. Since Hyper Beam became a special move, Mirror Coat would be required to replicate the feat.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Noctowl is hit by Steelix's Dig despite Flying-types taking no damage from Ground-type attacks.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: Harrison's Kecleon uses its tongue a lot during the fight. At one point, it even cuts down all the grass surrounding it. Ash manages to defeat Kecleon by having Pikachu grab its tongue, allowing him to finally be able to electrocute it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Hypno's reaction to Snorlax waking up pissed off after it uses Dream Eater on him.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Ash sends out Bayleef against Harrison's Houndoom despite the type disadvantage. Bayleef manages to fake Houndoom out and prevent it from using its fire attacks before knocking it out. When Harrison sends out Blaziken however, it proves to be too much of a match for Bayleef, as it doesn't even need to use its fire attacks to beat her.
