Good luck understanding this conversation.

Team Rocket has succeeded at locking up Pikachu, but Wobbuffet—who is holding onto the key—stumbles over a waterfall and is separated from the group. Team Rocket and the twerps race to find Wobbuffet. But will they find him in time before the air in the pod runs out?

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Wobbuffet.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: Wobbuffet falls into a river and eventually goes over a waterfall.
  • Pokémon Speak: Wobbuffet has a conversation with a Quagsire. It looks like he's asking for directions.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Pikachu spends the majority of the episode locked in an unbreakable PokePod, with Ash and the others' focus being to get Wobbuffet's key to get him out.
  • Spanner in the Works: Wobbuffet ruins Team Rocket's plan at the start of the episode by not even trying to hide after being handed the PokéPod with Pikachu inside. He also foils their getaway at the end by popping out of his Poké Ball, which allows Ash a chance to pop Team Rocket's balloon and snag the key back. Not to mention the way the chase repeatedly gets in the way of the activities of Goneff, a certain other criminal.
  • Oh, Crap!/This Is Gonna Suck: Jessie has this reaction when she sees Wobbuffet go over the waterfall:
Jessie: That's rather unfortunate, isn't it?
    • Later, Ash and Jessie leap onto the speedboat Wobbuffet is in just as Wobbuffet regains consciousness—but accidentally breaks the boat's steering wheel off in the process. They frantically beg Wobbuffet to place the steering wheel back, only for Wobbuffet to accidentally snap the gearshift off too, causing the boat to accelerate at an uncontrollable speed, with Ash and Jessie barely managing to cling onto the windshield.
  • Vine Swing: Wobbuffet gets in on the fun, and even does something similar to a Tarzan yell.
