The original twerps are reunited.

The kids at the Pokémon School go on a field trip to Kanto, where Misty and Brock are waiting to reunite with Ash and show the Alola kids the differences between Pokémon found in Alola, and their Kanto counterparts.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Lillie and Snowy find a Kanto Ninetales. Snowy approaches it, and it licks her affectionately.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Delia offers the other kids a tour of her house, including Ash's room.
  • Ash Face: Some harmless electrocution from Pikachu leaves the whole gang blackened.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Pikachu gets hit into the air by two angry Marowaks that are getting into a fight because he tried to stop them. It knocks him unconscious as he goes flying, but by the time he's landed, he's wide awake and incredibly angry - so angry, in fact, that he electrocutes everyone and leaves them all in a heap. His angry eruption is so dangerous that Togedemaru, an electric Pokemon with the ability Lightning Rod, is unconscious. According to Misty and Brock Pikachu's angry electrocution "brings back memories".
    • His embarrassed look implies his shocking was...unintentional...at best.
  • Blush Sticker: Bulbasaur is really happy to see Ash again.
  • The Bus Came Back: Misty and Brock return! Along with...
    • Misty's Staryu
    • Brock's Geodude and Crobat
    • Ash's Bulbasaur, Muk, and all 30 of his Tauros, with cameos from the Squirtle Squad, Corphish, and Totodile.
    • Jigglypuff has made its way back to Kanto from where was last seen in Hoenn.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: The last time Tracey was mentioned, he was still staying at Oak's lab. Despite this, he doesn't appear and no-one even mentions him in the episode.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Brock stopping to take care of Snowy makes sense, given that he used to have a Kantonian Vulpix. He also mentions that he's still in training to be a Pokémon Doctor.
    • Team Rocket go back to Kanto as well. When they see all the Alola and Kanto twerps are together, they decide to attack. They even do their classic motto (complete with the old logo, which had been redesigned since, and the XY remix of their original theme).
    • The episode contains (re-animated) flashbacks to Bye Bye Butterfree, Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden, Charizard's Burning Ambitions, Entei at Your Own Risk, and Gotta Catch Ya Later!.
    • In the Japanese version's stinger, Brock mentions that his eldest sibling Forrest is still in charge of the Pewter Gym.
  • Curb-Stomp Cushion: Team Rocket's Motion-Capture Mecha is rather quickly decimated, however Meowth does deflect a couple of attacks from Lycanroc beforehand, sending the twerps scattering frantically.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: In one of the Pokémon comparisons, a Kanto Exeggutor is compared to an Alolan Exeggutor. The Kanto Exeggutor is clearly envious.
  • Dub-Induced Plot Hole: The English dubbers stay closer to the Japanese script at the cost of confusing long-time fans. 4kids gave Misty a slight Dub Personality Change and removed her Japanese catchphrases. As a result, it may seem like Misty underwent a Girliness Upgrade to fans of the English dub, when in reality its simply a truer-to-the-source dub.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Coming off the plane, Snowy appears to be ill. Lillie calls for help, and Brock comes to their aid. He says Snowy is just motion-sick. Ash sees Brock as Lillie is thanking him.
  • Face Doodling: Jigglypuff also returns. Although Lana, Mallow, and Lillie react with Cuteness Proximity, Ash, Misty, and Brock notice the pen-microphone, and treat it as The Dreaded. Sure enough, they all get put to sleep, with this being the end result.
  • Funny Background Event: As the two Marowaks originally butt heads Pikachu is halfway up a tree as he was climbing it to entertain some of the other Pokemon and merely watches with interest until it truly gets violent and he has to step in as the peacemaker.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: RotomDex goes off on its own to catalog the entire Kanto Pokédex. The only one he misses is Mew, which means he somehow managed to find all three legendary birds and Mewtwo in one day.
  • Gratuitous English: As she usually did in the Japanese, Misty summons Staryu saying "Go, my steady!"
  • Hot-Blooded: Kiawe's Alolan Marowak butts heads with a Kanto Marowak. Later, it goads a wild Onix.
  • Imagine Spotting: When Team Rocket talk about being called back to HQ, Jessie mentions Giovanni's secretary, Matori. She then pushes a thought bubble with Matori's face off-frame.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Kiawe is overcome with emotion when a Rapidash allows him to ride it.
  • Internal Homage: Togedemaru defeats Raichu in almost the same way Pikachu used Agility to make one dizzy in Ash's rematch against Lt. Surge, in this case it's just accidental over-playfulness though.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Professor Oak mentions it's the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon school, just like how the anime is currently celebrating its own.
  • Long Bus Trip: It's been over 500 episodes since Misty or Ash's Squirtle's last appearance, 300 since Brock's, and almost 670 episodes since Jigglypuff's.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Team Rocket can be seen on the plane in disguise before everyone lands.
  • Motion-Capture Mecha: Meowth fights the twerps in one for once over the usual buttons and levers controlled ones Team Rocket usually supplies, keeping with his more frequent battling this series.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Misty strips down into her bikini from Pokémon Red and Blue before diving into the lake.
    • RotomDex "capturing" all the Pokémon for his databanks, only to miss the Mythical Mew, is kind of like what happened to Red at the end of Pokémon Origins.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • When Jessie summons Mimikyu, Bulbasaur's reaction is priceless.
    • While the Alola students adore the sight of Jigglypuff, Ash, Pikachu, Misty and Brock work out who the Jigglypuff is and, quite rightly, go into a panic.
  • Running Gag: Quite a few...
  • Schmuck Bait: Mallow finds a Vileplume and a few Gloom. Vileplume uses Poison Powder, and Brock and Misty have to tell her and Steenee to run.
  • Shock and Awe: The group finds a wild Raichu. Togedemaru gets really excited, running around it until she builds up an enormous static charge and electrocutes the Raichu.
  • Those Two Guys: Ash's Totodile and Corphish make a cameo together.
  • A Twinkle in the Sky: Never more literally than when Bewear jumps in from another airplane, reassembles the parts from Team Rocket's wrecked mecha into a rocket pack, and blasts off!
Misty (in Japanese): What is this feeling?
    • Earlier, Ash's Tauros send him flying because they're just so happy to see him.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When Lana, Misty, Lillie, and Mallow go out to look for Popplio, they get a Jump Scare from a Gyarados in a lake. But Lana doesn't scare off. Instead, she strips down to her bathing suit and jumps in, figuring Popplio is in that lake. Misty quickly follows suit.
    • While everyone else is getting electrocuted, the ground-type Kanto Marowak just stands there with an "Oh, that's interesting," look on his face.
  • Vocal Evolution: Michele Knotz has worked to differentiate her voice for Misty, adding a spunkier and slightly higher pitched quality to her performance. Compare her voice in this episode to her previous two performances as Misty, where Misty's voice was virtually indistinguishable from Knotz's voice for May.
