• Action Prologue: The ep starts with Ash battling Sawyer.
• Awesomeness by Analysis: Sawyer has deduced that Greninja's weakness is that he's mainly a close-range combatant, so a long-range specialist should make short work of him. He demonstrates this by trapping Greninja with Leaf Storm, which would have actually finished the fight until Greninja transformed.
• Curbstomp Battle: All of Sawyer's Pokémon couldn't leave a dent on Ash's team (Shelgon, Honedge and Sceptile vs. Hawlucha, Pikachu and Greninja respectively). Sceptile actually fared a little better until Greninja transformed, after which he finished Sceptile off with a single kick that sends the latter flying.
• Hyperlink Story: After multiple Mega Evolution specials and occasional cameos, Alain finally meets Ash for the first time.
• Power-Strain Blackout: This is the second time where Ash's exhaustion after Ash-Greninja's transformation was made explicit, whether he won (against Sawyer) or lost (against Alain). In later cases the strain is much worse.
