What happens when you take Friendly Rivalry to its logical conclusion?

The time has come for Ash to face Clemont at Lumiose Gym for the Voltage Badge. What can Ash do when his opponent already knows him backwards and forwards?

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Achilles' Heel: Heliolisk is incredibly fast but has to stop momentarily when opening its frills to use Parabolic Charge.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Ash notices that Heliolisk has to stop to open its frills when using Parabolic Charge and figures out that's the perfect instant to strike. Hawlucha is fast enough to pull it off and knocks Heliolisk out with a perfectly timed Hi Jump Kick.
  • The Bus Came Back: Clemont re-joins the group after losing his gym battle with Ash.
  • Call-Back: Bonnie notices that Ash and Clemont's battle starts out just like their first one did.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Bunnelby is revealed to have learned Wild Charge during Clemont's brief absence.
  • Fragile Speedster: Bunnelby and especially Heliolisk are fast, but they're not very durable and go down after a couple of direct hits.
  • Mighty Glacier: Goodra is too slow to keep up with Heliolisk but it's tough enough to tank hits from Luxray, allowing it to build up enough power to win with its Bide attack.
  • Mythology Gag: Pikachu using Iron Tail on the ground to force out Bunnelby is similar to what Volkner did during his official gym battle with Ash.
  • Oh, Crap!: Luxray before being blown away by Goodra's Bide in the climax.
