The journey to return to Lumiose City for Ash and Clemont's coming gym battle goes awry when Team Rocket takes control of a power plant, and seizes control of all the Electric-type Pokémon in the area. Ash and Clemont have to defeat them to save Pikachu, Dedenne, and Luxio.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Brainwashed and Crazy: James designs a device that can control Electric-type Pokémon. Pikachu, Luxio, and Dedenne are among them, as well as a group of various Electric types seen through the years.
- "I Know You Are in There Somewhere" Fight: Ash and Clemont do this with Pikachu and Luxio, coupled with the power plant workers sabotaging Team Rocket's device.
- Put on a Bus: Clemont departs from the group temporarily to prepare for his battle with Ash. Oddly, he leaves Bonnie with Ash and Serena.
- Taking the Bullet: Ash and Clemont willingly allow themselves to be electrocuted to try to save Pikachu and Luxio, respectively.
- Took a Level in Badass: Luxio evolves into Luxray after the initial malfunction in Team Rocket's device and learns Electric Terrain, allowing him to overload the device when they get it back working.
- Wham Line: Clemont deciding to leave the group to prepare for his gym battle with Ash.
