Japanese Title: The Hakudan Gym Battle! The Magnificent Viviyon's Dance Battle!!

Original Airdate: November 7, 2013

US Airdate: February 15, 2014

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Actually, I Am Him: Ash and friends ask for directions to the Santalune Gym from a friendly photographer. Only when Alexa returns did they learn that she is Viola, the Santalune gym leader.
  • The Bus Came Back: Alexa is there to greet Ash at the door of the Santalune Gym. After all, she did establish long beforehand that her sister is the gym leader.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Viola's Surskit fired Sticky Web several times at Fletchling, which missed because of Double Team. Later, when Viola's Vivilion unleashes Gust, Fletchling was pushed into one of those webs, trapping it.
  • Crush Blush: In the first of many occasions, Serena has a slight tint of red in her cheeks when she thinks about reuniting with Ash, and again when she's about to ask him if he remembers her.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Arriving at the Santalune Gym, Serena sees Ash, and was ready to go right up to him, not even realizing he was in the middle of a battle. Fortunately, Alexa decided to stop her.
    • Distraught at his loss in battle, Ash immediately departs for the Pokémon Center carrying Fletchling and Pikachu, not noticing Serena or the fact that he left his backpack behind.
  • Noodle Incident: The Running Gag of Bonnie asking a girl to marry her brother (in this case Viola) starts here, but Clemont implies this isn't the first time it happened.
  • Tempting Fate: A low-grade version when Serena excitedly wonders how Ash will react when he sees her again. Don't get your hopes up, Serena...
