This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
Actually, I Am Him: Ash and friends ask for directions to the Santalune Gym from a friendly photographer. Only when Alexa returns did they learn that she is Viola, the Santalune gym leader.
The Bus Came Back: Alexa is there to greet Ash at the door of the Santalune Gym. After all, she did establish long beforehand that her sister is the gym leader.
Chekhov's Gun: Viola's Surskit fired Sticky Web several times at Fletchling, which missed because of Double Team. Later, when Viola's Vivilion unleashes Gust, Fletchling was pushed into one of those webs, trapping it.
Crush Blush: In the first of many occasions, Serena has a slight tint of red in her cheeks when she thinks about reuniting with Ash, and again when she's about to ask him if he remembers her.
Arriving at the Santalune Gym, Serena sees Ash, and was ready to go right up to him, not even realizing he was in the middle of a battle. Fortunately, Alexa decided to stop her.
Distraught at his loss in battle, Ash immediately departs for the Pokémon Center carrying Fletchling and Pikachu, not noticing Serena or the fact that he left his backpack behind.
Noodle Incident: The Running Gag of Bonnie asking a girl to marry her brother (in this case Viola) starts here, but Clemont implies this isn't the first time it happened.
Tempting Fate: A low-grade version when Serena excitedly wonders how Ash will react when he sees her again. Don't get your hopes up, Serena...
