Recap / Pokemon S 17 E 25 Climbing The Walls

Go To

Our heroes arrive at the Cyllage Gym for Ash's gym battle with Grant. Ash is confident that he can win, now that he has developed a strategy to counter Rock Tomb. The battle starts with Froakie vs. Onix, using an improvised move that Ash calls "Rock Tomb Climb," where it dodges and climbs the rocks from the attack in order to avoid damage and get in close. Froakie wins the first round with relatively little trouble, but then Grant brings out his strongest Pokémon, Tyrunt, a Rock/Dragon-type with powerful jaws and extreme jumping ability. Froakie and Fletchling are beaten easily, so Ash brings out Pikachu as his final Pokémon. While Tyrunt is powerful, Pikachu manages to hang in there and even improvises a new version of Rock Tomb Climb called Draco Meteor Climb. Pikachu then manages to volley all of Tyrunt's Rock Tomb boulders away and even gets one stuck in its mouth, then finally finishes Tyrunt off with Thunderbolt, winning Ash the match and his Cliff Badge.

Tropes

  • Curbstomp Battle: Tyrunt beat Froakie no problem using Draco Meteor.
  • Curb-Stomp Cushion: Fletchling lost to Tyrunt in no time flat, though it did manage to squeeze a hit in with Steel Wing.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: A literal example, as Tyrunt is part Dragon-type and based on a Tyrannosaurus Rex, being a fossil Pokémon.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Ash spent time training to counter Onix's Rock Tomb and managed to beat it in the first round, only to then face Tyrunt, a much more dangerous opponent.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: One of the rocks from Rock Tomb in the climax gets stuck in Tyrunt's mouth after Pikachu hits it back with Iron Tail, rendering it helpless and getting zapped into defeat.
  • Oh, Crap!: Froakie and all of his Double Team clones when he sees Tyrunt's Draco Meteor shooting towards him.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Tyrunt is part Dragon-type and based on a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
  • Signature Move: Grant's favorite move is Rock Tomb, so Ash was wise to develop a strategy to counter it.
  • Tennis Boss: At the climax of the battle, Pikachu defends itself against Tyrunt's Rock Tomb by batting the rocks away using Iron Tail.
  • The Worf Effect: Onix is easily beaten by Froakie to show off Ash's anti-Rock Tomb strategy.
