Recap / Pokemon S 11 E 49 Barrys Busting Out All Over

Go To

Ash and his group return to Hearthome City for his long-awaited rematch with Fantina, but they encounter an overly hyperactive trainer named Barry who idolizes Paul.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Call-Back: Barry repeatedly mentions the Hearthome Tag Battle Tournament.
  • The Cameo: James' Cacnea is remembered when Barry talks about his gym battle with Gardenia.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Barry's first meeting with Ash involves them running into each other and quickly issuing a "fine" to Ash before quickly declaring he will be the strongest trainer and runs off not knowing he accidentally dropped his badge case. Quite the first impression indeed but the dropped badge case with three badges inside does hint at Ash gaining another rival in this series.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Way to make new friends, Barry: pointing out that Ash and Dawn are both inferior to a certain trainer who Rage Quit in the middle of a tournament, where Ash had to finish the match alone.
  • Motor Mouth: Barry loves to talk a lot. His first encounter with Ash involved threatening to fine him, then telling Ash to say something, declares that he will be the strongest trainer, and then runs off all before Ash could say one thing back to him. This comes back to bite him when he accidentally leaves his badge case behind.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is based on the song "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" from Carousel. Which makes more sense if you know that Barry's Japanese name is Jun.
  • Running Gag: Ash and Barry have a habit of literally running into each other in this episode.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Barry is a talented Pokemon battler, but his excessive pride is similar to that of a novice Ash during the original Kanto arc. Even after Ash demonstrates that he is a better and more experienced trainer than Barry when the former beat the latter in a 3v3 battle, Barry continues to believe the opposite.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Fantina has to refuse Ash's challenge to her, having just finished battling Barry when Ash and friends arrived, so her Pokémon have to rest. At least this time this means Ash will finally get to battle her; he has to wait a day.
