A match made in...well, it's made somewhere.

Team Rocket's latest racket is a fake gym, but they can't even get that scam right. Even with the cards stacked in their favor, they still lose. It doesn't help that they didn't bother catching that wild Croagunk that seems to be fighting their battles.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Acceptable Breaks from Reality: Dustox using Stun Spore, a move it cannot learn in the games.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Once caught, Croagunk wastes no time taking over the Running Gag of being a Moment Killer for Brock's romantic pursuits.
  • Monster of the Week: Croagunk. Jessie borrowed a wild Croagunk to fight battles at a fake gym. She abandoned it to go catch Pikachu, and Brock caught it.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Par for the course for Jessie and James as the fake gym leaders.
  • Pun-Based Title: The English dub title is based on "Jambalaya", and runs off the fact that Team Rocket are playing a fake gym; thus, using the words "gym" and "liar".
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Croagunk using Poison Jab to knock out Scizor, who is supposed to be immune to Poison moves being part Steel type.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Yeah, James really thought it was a good idea to try and physically force a smile upon the Pokemon that was just confirmed to be a Poison-type.
