• Chekhov's Gun: The Magikarp Salesman tells Team Rocket that they must wait a week after completion of the evolution-inducer before using the machine. Later, Meowth realizes that this is the reason why it doesn't work on their captives Magikarp and Feebas. It didn't seem to occur to the the Rockets that they might have been had, again...
• Lethal Joke Character: Magikarp and Feebas are the aces of the B-Button League, and the former kicks Piplup to high heaven while tying with Pikachu.
• Mythology Gag:
  • The B-Button League refers to the game mechanic that players utilize to cancel out an evolution.
  • Team Rocket with an evolution-inducing machine.
• Recurring Extra: The Magikarp Salesman returns; this time James isn't falling for his tricks, but he should have said so before the salesman swindled his money. This is notably the salesman's last major role in an episode of the entire anime as his last two appearances are mere cameos.
• What the Hell, Hero?: A minor one but when Brock says how he would help get Magikarp and Feebas from Team Rocket, Crogunk attacks Brock. Dawn then calls out Crogunk saying that attacking Brock at that time wasn't the right thing to do since he wanted to save them for noble reasons.
