Go To

As Ash prepares for his rematch against Roark, everyone wonders whether the Spin Dodge technique Dawn taught him will finally be enough to secure his first Sinnoh Gym Badge.

  • Irony: During Ash's first battle with Roark, he faces a significant setback due to the extraordinary jumping skills of Cranidos. Ash's attempts to attack or dodge from the air are futile, and he ends up losing the match. However, in their second encounter, Ash uses his Turtwig's cunning tactics to trick Rampardos into jumping, leaving it vulnerable to be defeated by Razor Leaf. As a result, Ash emerges victorious in the rematch
  • Oh, Crap!: Roark's reaction when he realizes that Ash is trying to have his Turtwig camouflage through the burned leaves to get close enough to his Ramparados.
  • Out-Gambitted: When Ash has his Turtwig jump into the air to avoid Zen Headbutt, Roark has his Rampardos jump too. This leaves Rampardos helpless as Turtwig spun on the ground and the Rock-type is easily finished off.
  • Pom-Pom Girl: This episode marks the very first time Dawn dresses up as a cheerleader to cheer on Ash in his battle against Roark. She would later do this again for a couple more of Ash's Gym Battles.
  • Rolling Attack: Used as a tactic by Ash and his Turtwig before knocking out Roark's Ramparados with Razor Leaf.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Using Dawn's tactic for stopping the rampaging Aerodactyl from last episode, Ash manages to get his Pokémon to dodge Roark's vicious attacks and win his first Sinnoh badge.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: The Diamond and Pearl theme song plays in the dub as Turtwig beats Rampardos.
